In general to become a software engineer you don't need a degree however in doing so you possibly limit yourself as when entering the work place their is more emphasis on you needing to prove yourself even more so if its one of your first jobs as a software engineer. Also if your going to use the degree route I would recommend doing a software engineering degree not computer science as it focuses more on the practical aspects not a blend of pratical and theoretical.

some recruiters require a top tier computer science university degree also why people wanna learn different topics such as algorithms,data structures, discrete maths etc...if you don't go to uni you can understand web development, databases, some programming language which is enough to be a web developer.A software engineer is not a web developer he must understand more...
