Do you think autotune actually makes a big difference?

Yes, often the difference is very noticeable.
Here is the autotune version of Katie Price & Peter Andre singing 'A Whole New World'.
This is the version with no autotune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8S1TxCihvk
I use the latter to punish evil cats, exes that stalk me or acquaintances that have long outstayed their welcome.

I like using to train my voice then take it off when it's good enough without it.

Try playing it at 800% volume on a laptop running vlc media player. :stomp:
Katie Price's singing is dreadful but Peter Andre's isn't much better, when he was young he was a professional musician with a large fanbase in Australia.

Have you compared to the original version with Lea Salonga & Brad Kane?
Or the american pop version with Regina Belle & Peabo Bryson?
Both show just how appalling the Price & Andre versions are- with and without autotune.

lol bro **** all that research. I learnt through experimentation. I'm a visual learner. I often don't know my own notes so the autotune helps me see what scale I'm in.

it's a tool which is pretty much ubiquitous in the industry. It can make a major difference, but usually it is used sparingly to tighten up very slight drifts

As long as you don't lose yourself in effects then you're fine. I recommend Waves Real Time Tune > Antares Pro.
