I applied at ASDA for a job and received a phone call to come with my passport so that they could have a copy and send it to a company to check that I have the right to work in the UK.Then they told me that I would have a telephone screening,What does that mean?
and why am I being asked to provide my passport?

Passport checks to confirm right to work in UK are standard practice, employers have a legal obligation to check right to work. It is common to be asked to bring your passport when attending for interview to cover this off upfront. The telephone screening.is some sort of interview/assessment process.
