It's not at all an uncommon problem this and the system really crucifies people in situations like yourself. As you mentioned, a job will definitely help you to bring your balance up. But. you should make use of your Universities hardship fund. If you contact their fees office, you should be able to get information on who to contact. Also. have you had a look at your university's bursary page? You could be entitled to anything from £1000 to £3000+ depending on the university.
