Witnessing domestic abuse as a child

I witnessed domestic violence as a child for 7 years. My parents who are still married normally argue loudly then make up and this has made me disinterested in romantic relationships. I frequently feel suicidal and have low self esteem because of my past. I’ve also never been in a relationship because of the above reason. How do I overcome this?

Really feel for you. I'm so sorry you had to witness all this. It's really understandable to feel this way :sadnod:

May I ask how old you are and whether you are still living in the family home, before I answer this? Just better to have this info so I can tailor any suggestions accordingly :console:

Hey! I've been in a very similar situation and I found accessing support from specialist domestic abuse services really helpful. including for people other than women and children. :yep:

They can provide things like an advocate, safety planning, help with leaving, trauma informed therapies (talk therapy, body therapies, etc), group work, etc.

I really feel for you, that's a horrible position to be stuck living in a household like that. (I'm much older than you but live at home, as my parents are my carers. There used to be a lot of domestic abuse at home, so can appreciate how living at home can be triggering.) I know it can be very hard to reach out about your situation, but Obolinda has given some great advice and empathy :yep: In addition to that, have you ever seen your GP about the suicidal feelings? You don't deserve to be feeling this way

Prdon one for asking but in the first sentence you said there was violent domestic abuse and then you finished the post by saying they just argued loudly. Which one was it?
