Do you have to actually apply to student finance to KNOW how much you'll get?

Not sure how I'm meant to work out if I can afford to go to uni based on the 'estimate' given by SF using their calculator. Can I actually apply, then back-out if it turns out it's not affordable?

The estimate should be pretty accurate (provided you've correctly calculated the income and can prove it), but yes, you can cancel your student finance application at any time, and contact the university to inform them you won't be taking up your place.

Also bear in mind that unis sometimes offer bursaries for those below certain incomes or who meet certain criteria, so that could be worth researching for your specific uni too
