Thanks!
I'm going to try and find decently priced places, spare my poor dad's pocket even more than the B&B and the 18hour round trip...

:woo:

That's ok!
Ooh that's long...I forget how lucky I am with such a short journey! Well, have a good journey, and enjoy St Andrews

Thanks

I'm not worried about quality really, only price. I have stayed in a £5 a night place called the ho ho hostel and i doubt i'll see as bad as that any time soon!

Hahaha...in Inverness by any chance??

Oh...sorry just read the rest of the thread...
Heather88
That sounds rubbish! From the outside you'd never realise it was that bad. I really doubt I'll ever need to stay in a hostel in Inverness since I live just outside of the city, but I will definitely keep your warning in mind, just incase!

I'm from just outside Inverness too...!!!
Sorry, there's not many people from our neck of the woods down here! Where abouts you from?

Yeah you're right, weird actually meeting somebody from nearby! I'm from over the bridge, on the Black Isle. What about you?

I know! Was the only one to come from my school, think there's about 3 from Millburn, 1 or 2 from Nairn, and my closest friend here was at Nairn Academy/Gordounstoun, 1 from Kilcheumen...otherwise don't know of many from nearby!

Cool, I live in Stratherrick, kinda in the middle of nowhere on the south side of Loch Ness.
What school are you at?

I think a lot of people from up here tend to forget about st andrews when applying to unis to be honest!

My uncle and aunt live at Whitebridge, which I think is in that similar area as you? Not too sure though, never been good with directions and stuff!

I left school almost 3 years ago, but I went to Fortrose. I've had a bit of a change of mind with uni stuff so am reapplying all over again. Which one did you go to? What year are you in now, and what are you studying?

Yeh, true! When I told people that's where I was applying/planning to go, they were just like Oh..., and none of my teachers had known of any pupil from my school going before! Lol...

Ooh cool! Yeh Whitebridge is near me!!! I live near Torness, so between Whitebridge and Inverness! Wow!

Aah cool ok, I knew some people from Fortrose academy, just hockey peeps really though. I went to the IRA. I'm in my 1st year, doing Biology with French. What you planning on studying?
Ha, so you were like branching out on your own a bit choosing to go there! I've applied for English and History. I'm not holding out too much hope for an offer, as I know it's really competitive, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. Hopefully won't have too long to wait to hear back now though, either way. Are you enjoying living there? I didn't even apply at first because I didn't think i would ever want to go to uni in such a small place, but then I changed my mind and substituted another choice after I'd sent off my application. I've never actually been to St Andrews!

They're keeping you waiting!!! :frown:
Good luck!
Yeh I'm loving it! Like, despite it being a small place, there is seriously loads going on all the time! There's all the pubs, the union (BOP!!! hehe), house parties, beach parties ...we had a bonfire on the beach on Sat, was so fun! But yeh, it's a lovely place, loads going on cos of the amount of students in a small place, and small enough to walk everywhere which is nice (and saves money!)
Lol... are you going to come down on an open day?

That's good, as long as it's lively and there's plenty to do i guess the size of the place doesn't matter really. I'd like to come down for an open day, but I might wait and see if I get an offer first or not!
It's interesting that you two say there's not that many people from your area that apply to St andrews. It's similar in Shetland, there's only really 1 or 2 each year that go I think.

Yeh I can imagine... tbh I think there is just a general lack of people going from the Highlands and Islands altogether :frown: tis sad! I don't think St Andrews is really put forward by schools up with us (well not at the IRA anyway...), I mean I only knew of it cos I came down to St Andrews playing hockey years ago and loved the town! Everyone I know seemed to go to Glasgow and Edinburgh, and a few to Aberdeen.

You guys, what do you think I should do? I can't decide on St Andrews or Bristol as an insurance.
St Andrews is far better known (internationally), but the offer is actually higher than my firm (not a huge problem since I'm from a different country, but frustrating), while my Bristol offer is far lower.

 How can you choose a offer with higher conditions as your insurance? If you miss your firm, you would also miss your insurance choice :s-smilie:
It would be a waste your insurance :eek3:

Why put a higher offer as first choice if you don't want to go there that much.

If you miss the lower offer there is a chance the higher one will still let you in if more people missed their offers than expected.

I'd hate to end up spending three years somewhere simply on the basis that putting my first choice as firm would have left no insurance.

I do, I do Biology and I did Chemistry last year. I actually do Psychology as an A level also! How come?

Because i was told my psychology would be counted as a science but now my lack of an actual science seems to be against me and the source of all my rejections :frown:

did chemistry last year -- failed just to piss of my teacher, hated her soo much.

Well because I assume I can probably negotiate the conditions. Durham is currently seeing if they could give me a more sensible offer as well. So my foreign school system has an advantage and disadvantage: the disadvantage being that the offers are ridiculous, and the advantage being that there is the possibility I could talk myself in.

Except with Bristol I will definitely get in. St Andrews I'd give myself about a 50% chance. But St Andrews appeals to me quite a bit more than Bristol. So there's my dilemma. Less nice but easier, or nicer but a bit more difficult.

Edit: and the reason I prefer Durham as my firm is because the Archaeology department is way better. So it'd just feel stupid to walk away from that.
