John Burnett had pretty large shared rooms and a nice dinner room  I really liked it! Nevertheless I think its too small as there are only about 50 people living in there and the main reason I wann go into a catered hall is to meet new people!

I just checked, theres 146 people in John Burnett...(42 single rooms, 34 shared) and then there's the annexe which is right next to it which has 36 single)
None of the catered halls would ever be as small as 50 people. I'm in Uni Hall which has about 280 people. Personally I prefer Uni Hall (I have stayed in JB at the Sutton Trust Summer School)
Def, if you want to meet people, go into a catered hall!

Yeah Ive seen some photos and they look pretty luxurious  but alot some people said that the community felling that Im especially searching for isnt that strong as in the catered halls.

Hmm it is kinda luxorious seeing as it's all ensuite, underfloor heating, double beds, but they rip you off for that so much! I know quite a lot of people in DRA, most of them are happy but don't feel the community spirit, but some feel really isolated, dont really get on with their flat mates, and cos of the lack of community spirit, don't really know people from other flats. Unless you're absolutely sure you're going to take part in a lot of clubs and societies etc you could feel isolated. Like my bf for example, he;s in DRA and he gets on with his flatmates ok, but he made friends from a group in Regs and will share a flat with them next yr, he also tajes part in a lot of societies etc, but he was saying yest he couldnt wait to get out of DRA. He wishes he'd been in a catered hall, there are so many more people to meet, and who you see everyday at meals, in the corridor, kitchen etc, and all the events regularly put on by hall. If you really want self-catered I'd go for it, DRA is of course very nice and luxorious, but personally I thnk catered is the best option for first year, and then DRA or any of the other self-catered halls or a private flat with a group of friends in 2nd year. I'm going into Albany Park with a group of friends from hall.
I also don't understand why DRA is so expensive (well obv cos of all the luxery etc), but it's more expensive than i'm paying for Uni Hall, AND I get food for that price too...
I'm saying don't go to DRA, but just to put my feelings!
I guess it depends on what kind of person you are, and what you want from your accommodation.

Yeah thats ok,i intend to mix with other people from other halls (hopefully) if the opportunity ever arises! As for the sports, i looked at all the clubs they run and i want to goto the tennis one, tae kwon do (hopefully its traditional not sport) and rifle shoot eventhough its only a .22 its still some sort of firearm! Maybe a few others depends on money and time really! I'm quite a quiet persom but want to make lots of friends so i hope it wont be that hard! it was either catered standard or self-catered en-suite for me as they are roughly the same price. But i need somewhere to stay in holidays as i cant always go home and i didnt think i could cover the costs of renting + food in the catered halls so thats why i leant more towards self-catered!

Hmm they told us that there are about 50 people ... maybe I missunderstood them
Im definitely going into catered in my first year and I agree with all the reasons you mentioned
Is Albany park or Fife park the accommodation which will be replaced by more DRA style accommodation?

they do have real hockey  ... but I guess you're talking ice-hockey? there isn't an ice rink in st andrews so that'd be a little difficult lol! but if it is really important to you, there's probs a team through in Dundee, only 25 mins on the bus.

Yeah I know its annoying :frown:
As I already told you on the open day Im playing volleyball and it isnt really strong in Scotland.

Fife park is the one being replaced, but that won't be happening till your in 2nd year. Fife Park really does need knocking down as i've heard it's in a terrible state, but I think it's a really bad idea to put another DRA there, so many people just cannot afford it! They should put another Fife Park or Albany type accommodation, would suit the student population a lot better I think. I mean Albany is only £2200, and you got everything you need, I dont see the point in spending almost £5000 (may be over that next yr, cos they're putting all the prices up) just basically for an ensuite and double bed... plus Albany is right next to the beach XD I'm excited!

Which hall are you hoping for?

argh! see this is why im still in doubt whether i really want to spend my coming 4 years in the uk, where people referring to land hockey as 'real' hockey.
but it certainly isn't dundee-important for me...

ok fair enough then, i mean yeh the preferences are completely individual!
I'm really quiet and shy as well, Uni will really help with that! I've made some of the greatest friends I couldve ever wished fro here, and have grown a lot more confident and independent!
As for sports, I really wanted to join hockey cos i've played for years, but I havent had the time this year (probs due to too much procrastination lol) but will defo join next year  but yeh def get stuck in!

Yeah I definitely wanna go into Fife Park or Albany Park in my second year, but in my first year Im applying for catered and shared accommodation due the community spirit. I think University Hall and St Salvators are pretty cool.
In which hall are you at the moment?

well, i dare you to put some skates on your feet! must admit though that i'm more of an afficionado than a "real" player (like you)..

i'll be doing IR and economics. how about you?

im still thinking about that last module though... don't know what to pick! does that third one count for in your grades as well, or can you take anything fun without having to worry about how it'll go??

oh no! so you can't fake your way out of it? like making up allergies etc... that's what i did to not have to go...
what are you going to do in the military?

this means that my, so far, only friend in st andrews won't be there next year :frown: :p:
Reply 2196
Yeah I tried to get out of it but they decided to torture me :frown:
I really wanna go up there next year, its so hard to wait another year.
I really fell in love with St Andrews
You can introduce me to all the pubs when Im coming up there 2010
Im not sure what I have to do there as its randomly decided which sort of soldier you will be :s-smilie:
I guess youve already firmed your offer?

I'm in Uni Hall... and it's absolutely AMAZING!!!! seriously, I'd definitely recommend it! It was voted by all the other halls (The Saint (student newspaper) went round asking people in other their thoughts on other halls) and what was said about uni hall was: "they have the best team spirit", "they're always chanting Uni Hall at events. do you know how annoying that is? it's not like you can come back with a snappy chant when you live in John Burnett Annexe" lol... and "their commitee is really proactive and that's why they have the whole 'community spirit' thing"

but yeh, totally biased towards uni hall here, but i'd say come here! just some of the events we have had/still to come:
FREE vodka bars (usually themed), garden parties (with a capella, bbqs, sumo-suit wrestling lol and free alcohol...), trip to fat sams club in dundee, pub crawls, the AGV vs boobsoc pub crawl (boys vs girls...hhaha), mr uni hall, hall ball (this years was 1920s themed, and you got free ice cream and champagne), private love actually screening at the cinema (with complimentary mince pies, sherry and a capella), halloween dinner, high table (some students invited to eat with the warden at dinner, a latin prayer is said by the warden, people wear gowns and can have wine), christmas dinner (free wine), dark knight film screening next week i thnk, ceilidhs in hall, a whole lot of st patricks day stuff, christmas cabaret (each floor does an act), pub quizzes in hall, promise auction, guitar hero, charity gig night, parties...
pheww... thats mostly this semester, can't remember everything there has been! and thats only the organised stuff, we quite often (almost every weekend) have a party on our floor etc
it really is a great hall spirit, love it!!!! any other qus bout uni hall, please ask!
Johannesd

haha well i cannot skate at all...have the worst balance you could imagine! plus it all looks a little too fast and furious for me!

cool! I do Biology with French, which is pretty good

aah ok, basically just pick something you're interested in/think would tie in well with your other subjects. the grade does count, though all you technically have to do is pass, which you should be able to do  , but I mean our first year grades don't count towards our degree anyway so don't worry about that!
I'd say pick something completely different that interests you, and gives you a bit of variation!
Oh my God....I love St As so much (having just visited), but then I love UCL so much as well. I'm absolutely crumbling... Such a tough decision.
