Yay! A mathematician and a philosopher!

I remember last year getting an acknowledgement email from the admissions office about a week after sending my UCAS application. Some people didn't get the email though, but I don't think there was any relation between acknowledgement emails and offers given....(I think..:s-smilie: )....:p:

aha, you're at st andrews, I need to ask you something lol.

I know the degree structure is very flexible at st andrews, but the website says it is a requirement to do 3 subjects in the first and second years, but I don't want to do that! I'm applying for philosophy and wouldn't mind doing modules in political ideologies, evolutionary biology and neuroscience but that's it! Plus, I don't think I would even be allowed to do the biological modules because I don't study any science or maths at A Level! :/

Could you clarify this for me?
I've applied to do Psychology for 2009!

Strictly the requirement is for 120 credits a year. In real terms most people end up doing three subjects because many departments don't offer more than 40 credits worth of first year modules. Happily, in your case, philosophy used to be two departments (Logic & Metaphysics, Moral Philosophy) and thus offers up to 80 credits a year (which is what I do, along with 40 credits in Medieval History).

Hope that helps.
I'm applying for Economics-Mathematics... Really would love a place, St. Andrews is amazing. Wouldn't mind doing some philosophy first year too...
I'm up from Switzerland to visit next week!
Ah I've been looking for a St.Andrews applicants thread!

Ummm... Anyone heard anything yet?

I've not got an acknowledgement yet, anyone else in the same boat?

***Applying for International Relations btw  ***
Applying for English lit I think.. haven't even done my personal statement yet, feeling really behind everyone else now! Meant to do it properly tonight, but find myself watching hollyoaks instead...

History of Art & French! I'm going to the open day on Wednesday! *excited* Haven't sent off my application yet, really hope to get it done by the end of this week!

This all feels so unreal... I've barely got my head around the application process and everyone on this thread is a stranger to me but imagine if I get in and some of you will get in and then I'll, like, MEET you, and stuff. It's, you know... weird.

*is most definitely jinxing this*:p:

Chemistry with a year in industry 09 entry, I've already had a rejection letter from Imperial i really hope St. A's give me an offer as its my first choice :/

Was its the student recommendation in the prospectus with horrible grammar that made you want to do chemistry at St Andrews :p:

Cool, I was thinking about UCL but the thought of studying in London scared me!

Yeah, it's as Jormungandr said- you don't necessarily need to do 3 subjects, you just need 120 credits. Philosophy has 2 modules per semester in first year and I'm sure there are other subjects which offer more than one- I know Maths does...
I don't know about biology or neuroscience, but I know there's a limit as to how many credits you can take from a different faculty- you would be admitted to the Arts faculty, so you would only be allowed a certain number of credits from the Science faculty. 40 credits springs to mind....
Loads of people changed their mind about their 3rd subject while they were on their way to meet their adviser, so don't think too much about what you might choose! :p:

I'll be applying for English and German at any rate. Whether it's my first choice or not, I'm not sure.
*gasp* Good luck everyone! I remember the complete emotional trauma that was waiting for my offer last year! But it's all worthwhile :p:
I haven't even got an acknowledgement yet.

Dont worry, its normal. When you hear people say 'yeah dont expect to hear anything from St Andrews for a while because theyre very slow' most people (myself included as an applicant) think, yeah OK, it will be a few weeks after everyone else Im sure I can wait that long, when you get closer to the truth is you replace the words 'few' with 'many' and 'weeks' with 'months', even then thats optimistic! Dont worry they are a lot quicker about things when youre actually here, I guess they just like to take their time with applicants to ensure they are getting the students they want

Anyway in short, dont worry, keep hoping the best and expect to wait, and wait, and wait! :p:
