Edinburgh physics 2nd y entry – how to prep?

Hi,
I'll be studying physics at Edinburgh in September. I'm entering directly in 2nd year and don't want to be too behind with 1st year material.

To catch up I'm working through "Principles of Physics" which I believe is the only textbook used in 1st year(?) but I'm not sure how I should prepare for the maths parts of the course as the uni course content page doesn't mention any textbooks/reading material for this.

Any advice and suggestions are much appreciated,
Thank you

(PS: I'm new to TSR, apologies if this post is 'done' incorrectly/posted in the wrong forum/etc.)

Also i would love to have a direct 2nd yr entry but i didnt mention it in my ucas application unfortunately. Can i still change it?

Hi, I'm really in the same situation as yours; international student, applied for Physics, still waiting to hear from Edi, offers from Imperial, UCL.
I asked Edi last month if I could be considered for 2nd year entry even if I applied in 1st year
They didn't answer my emails but I called and the person on the phone told me that I couldn't change my application now, and 2nd year entry could only be considered on Results day, depending on results (mine and other offer holders?)
So I guess there is low hope, even if Edi bachelor is 4 years and not 3 years as others...

hey!! thats really cool to hear am almost certain u ll be firming imperial 🙂 i checked the conditions for 2nd yr entry and am almost hopeful of fulfilling them(unless something goes terribly wrong).. and i hv another question- I received an offer for the MPhys course with yr abroad so if i get into 2nd yr directly can i still do the yr abroad or will i be allowed to only participate in the student exchange program like every1 else?

Heya! Yes from my exp, I would recommend Edi over the other 2 (I had also considered applying to ucl and had an offer from uom) but oc this is very much personal preference. Not sure where they all place on uni rankings rn but they are all considered solid unis and as far as I can tell have similar reputations. With that in mind, I'd pick based off of what city u like the most, how much u care for student city vibes, diversity, nightlife and those sorts of things.
From my exp Edi is gorg and is probs the most studenty city in the UK. And it has a stupid amount of societies like u can't make that stuff up. Night life on the other hand isn't top tier.

I think I also didn't select for direct entry in my application but was able to change it, just shoot the applications team an email. Tho think v v carefully about whether you actually wanna go for DE. I think a lot of kids that do it (myself included) come from being great students at their schools and automatically go for whatever's most competitive - coz they're used to doing well even when they go for the tough options. But at uni, work does get A LOT more demanding and DE for me was a bit much. I managed v well but was a little traumatic and going back I prolly would done regular entry. There was this crazy stat going arnd that ppl who do direct entry on average score a grade less (I think that's 10%) than regular entry ppl (in the final diploma that is, which counts the last 2/3 years for bachelors/intergated masters). And that's cuz if u struggle in the DE year u obvs don't learn the content as well and that then makes future years a little harder. Alternatively doing regular entry means you get a bunch more free time to enjoy uni life - which is great!! Soz, not trynna scare u off doing it haha, just make sure u think it through.
Pls ask if u have other qs, love helping ppl in my same position

Hiya. Sorry to hear abt ur troubles applying for DE :\ hope it works out. Have a look at my reply to reply 2, most of that is prolly relevant to u too. Re Imperial specifically, I personally decided not to go for it based off of its student wellbeing situation. I've heard a fair amount of ppl saying that it is super competitive and they are overworked af. Also it's a stemm only uni and nothing necessarily wrong w that but Idk if ur gonna be in that environment most of the day I think it can get a little numbing - stereotypes on physics ppl are kind of true XD. But this is based off of hear say and discussions on threads like these so don't give my input too much weight.

Ah sorry I'm not sure whether year abroad degrees allow u to start directly in Y2. Shoot the admissions or whatever team an email they'll know

Ayy that's great to hear ) And nws! Btw soz should've been more specific abt the nightlife thing. Edi does have tons of nightlife but specifically its clubs are kind of mid (imo). But that just means you'll have to try a few before finding the ones u like. U r by no means doomed to mid nightlife

If u do come to Edi and/or have more qs pls ask!

Uh not sure, completely depends on how many hs ppl work. Most part time jobs here for students pay just above min wage. Many students get jobs w "zero h contract" or smnth where basically u don't have a set schedule and have more freedom to not work when deadlines stack up or arnd exam szn. 20-25k sounds fantastic but again thing to consider is hourly pay. Hope that helps!

Hiya
Defo recommend Pollock halls. Huge student accommodation almost entirely first y students. Tons of opportunities to meet ppl. Its also catered which is great for ur first y there - don’t have to worry abt meal prep on top of all the other new things (don’t underestimate the pain of meal prep!). Some ppl **** on it coz it has a rep of being full of posh boarding school kids (not untrue) but ull find ppl from all over and can just stick to the crowds u like.
hope this helps. Lmk if u have other qs

depends on what degree path you're on. If you're mathematical read up on pure maths and in particular analysis and algebra, if you're any other read up on general maths (calc etc). The physics itself isn't really a step up beyond a level at the start of y2
