I've noticed that in Scotland you can marry at 16, is there any reason for it? I mean, marriage is marriage, if the relationship works then it works, we as a society are much too judgemental about large age gaps, or a person doing something significant younger than average (like going to university and dating).

Are you saying it should be lower, or higher?

You can in England+Wales too (but you need parental consent)

Marriage at 16 is low enough for me without parental consent, sometimes it does work. Plus if someone is mature enough to vote, pilot a glider, move out from their parents, rent an apartment, hold a joint tenancy of a mansion, work full-time and leave school (all granted at 16) then they should be able to marry without parental consent.

At 16 I was not mature enough to rent a place, live on my own or get married I probably wasn’t even mature enough to vote as I wouldn’t have cared enough to do any research.

These are all things you can legally do in Scotland at 16. You actually can rent a place at 16, and vote at 16.

For those who want to raise the marriage age: If you raise it to 18, raise everything else that I just said, or it's hypocrisy.
