Magnesium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid.

MgCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

(a) What mass of magnesium carbonate would react with excess hydrochloric acid to produce 240cm3 of carbon dioxide, measured at room temperature and pressure?

Data: 1mol of any gas occupies 24.0dm3 at room temperature and pressure
Molar mass of magnesium carbonate = 84.3gmol−1

A 0.843g
B 8.43g
C 84.3g
D 843g



The answer is A but i don't know how. can someone show the steps?

How many moles of carbon dioxide are there being produced?

Once you've got that, work out how many moles of MgCO3 there needs to be using the ratio in the balanced equation.
