Too little, too late. You're basically implementing it when it doesn't matter anymore. The trolls and conspiracists have already completely poisoned the covid megathread and almost any discussion about it on this website. The damage is already done. This is something that should have been implemented back in 2020.

Although I do agree with the second part. It's best to not entertain trolls. Unfortunately most of my generation these days is too emotional and can't logically see that this person is trying to get a reaction, and so they shouldn't respond.
It should have been implemented in 2020, yes. And TSR have admitted that. Better to do it late than not at all. And I don't know if I'm being rather cynical myself in saying that discussions about covid will still matter in less than a month.

Somewhat rhetorical, but with a greater % of anon posting, past a point why bother logging in at all? log in somewhere that doesn't have the same issues.
Agreed, it's a sticking plaster to the real issue - fortunately the areas I tend to post in don't have much in the way of anon posting. I see it mostly on the front page and has put me off looking in those threads in the first place if it's started by anon.

Agree, I don't want to get into specific mod decisions but I used to try my best to report and keep the place clean, but then felt pretty unappreciated after an anon mod sides with an obvious troll over me and told me my conduct was unacceptable, so I just stopped interacting with them.
It feels like a kick in the teeth when that happens and it happened to me too on the Covid Megathread (RIP). The trouble is, the mods aren't reading all the posts so they will reprimand us over one cross word without seeing all the goading and misinformation and veiled insults that has led up to that moment. I think the moderation team should pay more attention to the whole thread (be monitoring it in the case of the most important ones such as the Covid Megathread) rather than just react passively every time someone reports a comment.

I am curious about this because I have reported what seems to be the same troll a number of times but they haven't been banned.
This is something you're best enquiring about in the Ask the Community Staff forum. When there seems to be a consistent problem with a user behaving poorly in the forums, I find it more successful to take it up in AtCS rather than a report on a single post.

Just adds that context, which others have stated is important with moderation.

These are usually trolls and these usually get banned pretty quickly remember to report any that you see! VPNs being widespread means IP bans are not as effective anymore. I will certainly pass on about the suitability of anon in different forums!

Will definitely pass this on, good point

I know there are people looking at what TSR can do with the app at the mo  (but yes, I agree )
wouldnt it be possible to make it so like other forums, just to ban all VPN IPs anyway, or physically ban the MAC address of the device/devices

True - other sites don't seem to feel the need to have Anons posting everywhere so I don't really see why TSR considers it so vital when regular users have expressed over and over again that we don't like it. Yes it may encourage more posting - from Trolls!

Or perhaps only allow it on specific threads, which can be heavily moderated. I really enjoy the "get something off your chest anonymously" thread, for example.

Get rid of Anon! (apart from very sensitive forums like mental health/sexual health).

Anons are doing so much harm to this site and mostly Anon is used where it is completely unnecessary and often for someone to hide behind just to insult/belittle other users. I barely ever even respond to Anons anymore because they have been rude to me so often.
Currently anon is only available in a couple of forums anyway (those forums just happen to be quite large ). But yes I will pass this on

A much firmer hand to be taken with COVID and vaccine-related misinformation. There's no debate to be had - letting people post misinformation and persuade others not to get vaccinated just endangers TSR users and their families.
I think this was one of the main reasons that the covid-megathread unfortunately was closed. Remember you can report any posts you believe to be breaking the community guidelines
(Original post by Gent2324)
from a thread that got locked:

the default column should be "trending", instead of "latest", add downvoting and then sort the posts by descending upvotes, and add another column called "controversial" (like reddit does) where there would be the debating threads. this means the site doesnt rely on mods to remove troll posts 24/7 and it works automatically.

also the frontend of the website needs updating, and either drop the app or update it
Interesting, thanks!
(Original post by anosmianAcrimony)
It'd be awfully mean of them to start a thread about what suggestions we have for TSR, and then be like "you made the wrong suggestions, we're closing the thread!" They wouldn't do that... would they?
I’m not planning on closing the thread :nah:
(Original post by Cote1)
I am curious about this because I have reported what seems to be the same troll a number of times but they haven't been banned.
I think that’s something to ask in ask the community staff (with a specific example of possible). If it’s the same user then they should be able to help, however if you suspect it’s the same person operating under different usernames I’m not sure how much can be done
(Original post by Reality Check)
Another good thing would be an up-to-date list of the names of the principal CT and a brief description of what their job is. Avoiding jargon here would be welcome - as has already been pointed out, what in earth does a 'Community and Engagement' officer do? Clear, plain-English descriptions of roles with names attached would help make the CT seem less 'ivory tower', which they never were before.
Good suggestion

Yes, I always do. The reason I posted about it here is that not enough seems to be done about it, when I report. At most, posts are edited to include a reminder to look at official NHS guidance. There are posters who repeatedly, deliberately post false and dangerous information, and I've not once seen their posts removed. And what's really needed is for those people to be banned.

You don't need to quote trolls at all.
There is already a way of identifying them - use the post report button and ignore the thread.
The reason trolls keep returning is because they get attention from people replying to their threads (doesn't matter what you post, the more a thread is bumped the more people click on and read it).

Trolls don't make accounts to receive positive rep
You're talking about the theory, not what actually happens. People do continue replying to trolls and quoting them, often to voice their disagreement or disapproval when neg rep could far more quickly let others know it's a troll and avoid that thread and report. And not even just for trolls but to be able to disagree with posts in general, you know, how like pretty much every other forum has. It feels like this site is becoming more and more baby-like with people unable to tolerate anyone disagreeing with them. Welcome to the real world, where people don't always agree on everything! And as an older member mentioned, neg rep caused people to moderate their posts more for fear of being negged and getting banned.

Besides which, I feel like the original reason for the anonymous feature is still very valid. Sometimes people want to ask questions or get advice on personal things they'd feel uncomfortable having connected with their name. And I think it's nice that TSR is a place where people can do that.

Its definetly an issue but I dont think it needs to be gotten rid of entirely. It seems appropriate for the subforums that its available on.

I think instead there should be a 3 day wait and certain amount of required posts for new accounts similar to what was done with pms, and the first few anon posts the account makes to go into pre-moderation. And then some sort of strike system, like 4 abuses and you can no longer use the function, no appeals.

Agreed, and we might see more on this in September (I know as much as you at the moment). My advice in the mean time is going down the route of on and off topic. It's so easy for people to draw you off into a tangent. For example, when someone takes a thread discussing covid testing and moves the discussion to be entirely about vaccines. It's derailing just because they're trying to push a certain agenda. Best thing to do is keep the topic as narrow as possible and say "hang on, this thread is about testing". That, and never get personal otherwise the conversation goes downhill faster than Usain Bolt in a tabogan.
My strategy has just been to avoid threads where people are talking about COVID and vaccines entirely. They seem pretty well infested with conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxxers at this point. Reporting them seems to do very little, and engaging with them just bumps the thread and lends them legitimacy.

A couple of years ago, I noticed that some very dodgy loan shark websites were obtaining "Official Rep" status accounts on here and being permitted to market to TSR users. I haven't seen any of them around in a while so maybe TSR has stopped allowing them to do that. I certainly hope so.

Also the last time I opened TSR without an adblocker (admittedly a long time ago), there were ads for casino websites. As a website with a predominantly underage user base, I think TSR should think very carefully about whether those are suitable ads to run, if it hasn't already.

I am talking exclusively about troll threads, not disagreements between users. I'm not asking anybody to agree, I'm reminding you and anyone else reading this thread of basic troll etiquette - report and ignore. The thread is rule breaking and will be removed ASAP. Posting in it achieves nothing. Other users can work out it's a troll. You can tell because when you hit the report button you find it has 3/4/5 reports already. This isn't something that's new either - it's always been the case that you report and ignore trolls. If you reply, they'll keep coming back.
