BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma - Will Unis accept this??

Hello

I recently got accepted into a college on an IT course, that is a BTEC Level 3 foundation diploma, therefore it is only a year.

I chose this course, as I dropped out of my previous college due to not fitting in there, and really couldn’t stand doing another 2 years of the same stuff, therefore I believe a 1 year course is the best option. The course I was studying had the same content however was an extra year.

I’m now a little worried about the course, and whether it would be accepted by any universities. I had already achieved a merit in my previous college, and I could definitely get a distinction.

If anyone has any information if any universities will accept the qualification, please do respond. TIA

A Foundation Dipoma is equivalent to 1.5 A levels in regards to UCAS points, so on its own may not be sufficient for University. What qualification and grade do you already have from your previous study? The two combined may give you enouugh UCAS points.

I didn’t receive any ucas points as I dropped out a few months before the end of my first year. I believe I was distinction level which is 72 UCAS Points on the Foundation Diploma I’ve applied to. I’ve seen some universities like Chester who accept 72 ucas points, however do they care about the actual qualification or the tariff?

All universities in this country accept BTEC as level 3 equivalent for entry (except for UCL) although some may ask for accompanying A-levels. I'm a trainee BTEC level 3 IT teacher but I did the course myself 5 years ago. For example MMU where I did my degree ask for "Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (1080) in IT or Computing DMM". Unless you have other UCAS points, the foundation course isn't going to cut it.

Thanks for the reply. I can get a maximum of 84 UCAS points on the course, and I was looking at getting a distinction which is 72 ucas points.

I saw a course at Chester that only asks for 72 ucas points for a degree with a foundation year. This sounds promising but I’d rather have guidance from those who have knowledge on the topic. Thanks!

According to their website, although they ask for 72 UCAS points, they do state that for a BTEC thhey require a minimum of MM at National Diploma which is a higher course than Foundation, so they may not accept it. Best bet is to email and ask if they would take a Foundation Dip at Distinction. Additionally, although you say you were working at Dis level on your old course, the new FD has 2 exams out of the 6 units and the exam results are 41% of the overall grade. This makes it much harder to achieve an overall Distinction unless you get the highest marks possible for both exams, so maybe keep this in mind when planning. Have a Plan B!
