Can’t get into university

I achieved AAB in 2018 in biology, chemistry, and maths. I couldn’t go to university due to family issues. My parents had a baby when I was in year 13, and she was born with severe medical issues. I had to stay home and look after her when my parents were at work, and get a job so they could be with her some of the time.

She’s a lot better now so I applied for university this year. Due to two years worth of students applying with inflated grades, I was denied a place at all five of my universities. There are C grade students getting straight As and A*s whilst I’ve always been an A grade student and worked hard for my grades, but less intelligent people get the university spaces. But now I’ve lost my entire future and I don’t know what to do. This has left me feeling very down and depressed and nothing in clearing looks appealing and I can’t go through adjustment.

Then I would suggest you wait a year or two, get some experience in the world of work or do some volunteering etc
There are plenty of things you can do in the meantime
what course are you interested in?

Thats a tough pill to swallow. And with grades pre-covid I can definitely understand the frustration.

Realistically moving forward.
-You can try for a foundation year that opens up options onto courses your interested in
-Re-apply next year
-move onto a less competitive course.

I don’t want to stay at home for another year. I love my sister but I need to get my life back on track, especially as now I’m probably going to have to be a carer when she’s an adult. I want to get a top degree to get a better job so in 14 years time I’ll have enough money to support her. I guess a less competitive course could still get me a good job.

University is about what you achieve not where you go. Their are lots of students who do great things from lots of universities. You can always look to move into your target universities for a masters as well.

You can use this as motivation to achieve great things wherever you land.

Thank you. I’ll take a look at some other courses with lower grades. I know that I can do better but if my grades mean nothing now there isn’t anything I can do about it. It’s the end result that matters, so if it’s good I can look elsewhere.

Call them up and you'll find out.

Are they lenient?

ABB is the typical offer, you will be fine.

It looks like they are asking AAA for the main course or BBB for the foundation year onto the bachelors (in clearing) no harm in trying for either or both.

And they will allow you to detail your personal circumstance

AAB is a great result. Hold your head up high. Get on the phone as others have suggested and advocate for yourself. Explain the journey you have been on and how you had to be a carer but you don’t want to delay your university place any more. You are ready. They will be lucky to have you.

You are right, raised the grades.
Great advice on this thread

Thank you so much. I’m going to ring them up and try to get on. I really need to do this for myself and my family, and if I don’t do it now I fear I never will.

Hi anon,
Your frustration with the grade inflation is understandable, although as others have said your University journey does not have to end here. There are so many Universities that will be lucky to have you, and at which you can continue to work hard and excel. Hull is currently offering Marine Biology through clearing and do not have rigid requirements, so can factor in the grade inflation difference within the last 3 years, and of course being closer to the coast and a very large river is always helpful for a marine biology course too. (There may also be some financial assistance or bursaries available to you in relation to the care you have provided your sister that the finance team can advise you on.) Definitely worth having a little look (https://www.hull.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/marine-biology-bsc-hons) or giving admissions a call to consider as an option (01482 466100).
Hope this helps and good luck, the determination you've had through the last 3 years is bound to pay off in one way or another.
