Negatives of Oxbridge

Have you got in anywhere yet?

I'll go to the US for sure, even if it means going to a poorly ranked university.

Don't you know that India was under British rule until 1947?

Can I ask you why/how you always write in that very difficult to read cyan colour?

Because I want to.

In your text box there are some editing tool bars above the field. A small arrow next to the A gives you a drop down menu of colours to choose from. Or, if you know the code, you can type in the tags yourself.

I think we all do know that, yes. However, it doesn't have any real relevance. I'd advise you don't mention it any more and keep things relevant. What this country did to India is of no relevance to your Cambridge rejection.

Now, you've had your say. Just yesterday you said you were leaving TSR and heading off to a US forum (don't link to it again). So why are you still here?

Oh, I know how to do it individually. But I meant that it must take you a long time to put the colour in every time, so you might have some sort of setting that means that it automatically does it. Like a signature, but...for the text.

Do you not find it very difficult to read?

Why though? Their maths education (at high school level) is poorer than Britain's. Just look at MIT's video lectures (http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/courses/av/index.htm#Mathematics) - they take ages to cover stuff I'd expect most Oxbridge/Imperial/Warwick level mathematicians to know even before university. And this is MIT I'm talking about, not some "poorly ranked" university.

Of course I do. I just found what you said funny and sad at the same time.

YESTERDAY? He's said it LOTS of times before :p:.

No, I do it manually.

No I don't find it hard to read. If you do, why don't you select the text with your mouse which will highlight it and make it easier to read.
If you're that put off by it, just don't read my posts :shifty:

With the AP tests, I can skip a year at a US uni.

What Britain did to India was not funny, mind you!

I agree with all of those criticisms except where you said that all you get are pretty buildings and the chance to pretend to be a toff.

I know some people don't enjoy tutorials or supervisions, but my learning experience is a huge deal nicer as a result of this, and its a large reason behind choosing the University. I really enjoy my lectures, and the teaching from my department is generally fantastic. Also the college system and the size of my department mean that I have closer contact with the academics and also other students. I think making friends here was easier than I personally would have found it elsewhere. Additionally the library system is a lifesaver for me here, as is the hugely generous bursary scheme. Financially I'd have struggled at most other Universities.

Oh, I like it very much, I was putting a negative slant on it in view of the [ex]Op's position :p:. I do think you could get most things you get here from other unis (although obviously I have no experience of this) except those above and the fact that the IQ is probably generally a little higher, and that people are more geeky (and probably that the library resources and journal access here are great). I think I'm probably far more content here than I would have been elsewhere though.

You're fighting a losing battle there... :p:

arisk01
You won't be spending 3 or 4 years with pretentious idioms

Yeah, there's nothing worse than a pretentious idiom...

ixivxivi
cleaners coming into your room everyday,

Clean rooms with no effort? **** that.

ixivxivi
the chance to pretend to be a bit of a toff (eg with punting and formal hall).

How are either of those at all posh?

Yeah, there's nothing worse than a pretentious idiom..

You were the first to pick up on this, I did it on purpose

Clean rooms with no effort? **** that.

How you feel about your cleaner depends entirely on who your cleaner is and what they do. I, for one, do not produce enough rubbish to require someone emptying my bin everyday (and I'm perfectly capable of taking rubbish out to the trash, which I do, in an attempt to discourage this...). It's just a nuisance and basically a waste of money. Additionally I don't like the idea of basically having servants. Guess who got woken up by their scout today (to be told that men were coming to measure the room in an hours time)?

Dressing up in fancy clothes and gowns, eating strawberries on the river, getting college teas with scones, clotted cream and jam is posh, but very enjoyable :p:. I thoroughly enjoy being a big fat oxbridge cliche every now and then.

You don't seem to have realised that I was replying to a thread (which was then merged with this one) made by someone that had just been rejected and was looking for consolation (and I don't think oxbridge is the utterly utterly best place, at all); there's no need for the prickliness.

I don't mean it in a horrible way, just I hate things not looking neat and tidy and things being different... Anyone with different fonts on here really stresses me out.

And I don't want to stop reading your posts.

Do Oxford/Cambridge participate in Erasmus? If not, I think that's a negative. If you'd want to spend a year abroad during your degree, that is... as you can do at most other universities.
Reply 373
that's actually a really good question. I have tried researching it on the colleges websites (cambridge that is) but could not find it.
I do not think so though, as term dates are different.

but does anyone know?
Cambridge doesn't.
It doesn't but you can still go abroad for a year in some triposes. My (English) college Father is in Paris and several MML students go abroad for a year.

Its a different colour (deepskyblue NOT cyan!!!) rather than a different font, and I'm sure you've already guessed that the reason I chose it was at least partly to be different, so clearly we have clashing interests in this matter.

This is really pointless!
However, I really cannot bear people with different fonts, it does actually make me itch.
Yours isn't so bad, objectively. And your posts are quite interesting. Mhmm...
At least it matches the colour scheme.

Maybe it's different in oxford, but here we can just leave our bin outside if we don't want them coming in.

I guess so. Scones are good.

LOL. If you study MML you can go abroad? That makes Oxbridge so special!

You know there are people who study Maths, Engineering or Science who can speak foreign languages and who might want to study abroad for a year?

It's true you know... :yep:

Well one of my friends has just come back from a year on Erasmus in Spain, and she's not a linguist (she does SocAnth). I've heard her say several times that the university was really unsupportive though, but I don't know the details (I could ask if anyone's interested). What is certain is that Cambridge doesn't accept any foreign students on Erasmus (all the exchange students you'll see are here because their university has a partnership with Cambridge). So it looks like you can go on Erasmus if you really want to, though it might depend on how accepting your faculty/department is.
