old hall in emmanual college cambridge, NO BATHROOMS!! You have to go to new hall or to a hostel...
Maybe not as good social life as other universities?

Come on, surely you can come up with better arguments of fending for yourself than bedsheets?! :p: In any case, I'm pretty much self-catered.

My negatives of Oxford:

1) You often feel like an idiot
2) There is a general lack of praise
3) Some of the tutors are clueless about pastoral care and learning disabilities
4) Some of the tutors should clearly just being doing research and not teaching
5) General state of huge disorganisation
6) The Oxford Union hacks
7) Questionable standards of English amongst some of the international students
8) Very cold :frown:
9) No Poundland :frown::frown::frown:
10) Some of the tutors just shouldn't be allowed to teach. At all.

That's really put me off. :frown:

I'm just thankful it's Oxford and not Cambridge!
Has im so academic even chosen what he wants to do? It seems you only have one commitment which isn't to any specific subject.

Well, there's only one long vac, that's what they call the summer "holiday". As West Wing said, they have a thing about the word holiday as they claim it implies a lack of work etc. Anyway, I was just pointing out that sentences with one plural and one singular subject can be odd, because that's the sort of thing I find fun.

You're applying for Magdalene English right? That be cool.

:yep:
I'm excited about the interviews! I don't really rate my chances on getting in, and I'm not so worried about doing so now that I've got an offer from Exeter, but the thought of a good chat about lit. appeals to me - no-one in my family shares my enthusiasm, and most of my friends are scientists!
Do you know who normally conducts them? and do you have to stay overnight or anything like that?

Hmm I guess it is interesting, I've never really thought about it before  I always think that they should agree all the way through. I don't like sentences with one plural and one singular subject - I just hate the way they sound - *shivers* like they're a bit messy or something! ...but maybe that's just me :p:

I would say that's a positive, the reason being that you are with people with the same interests as you etc.

Now I understand why you have so much neg rep.
**CutiePie**
Work load? That's all I can possibly think of.

The work load is a negative, yes. I've been doing over 6 hours private study a day on average.
And although I wouldn't know myself, I've heard that if you're into 'serious clubbing' then the 'scene' isn't great.

What a load of rubbish. People (well, probably not you) don't tend to make friends with other just because have a comparable level of intellect.

True, but personally I would find it as a nice bonus if they were.

Angelil
I saw levels of social retardedness that were absolutely stratospheric, including extremely poor levels of English from internationals who have allegedly passed English tests in order to go to Oxford, 25-year-olds with the social skills of 15-year-olds, and people who don't know how to park bicycles.

I'm not sure if this is a postgraduate/Oxford thing as I haven't seen any of this.

I have to say, I have no idea about the actual university, but I don't get whats with all the Cambridge haters here. Its a great city , there are also plenty of non-chain stores if you actually look in the right places, obviously there are none in the town centre but still

Tbh I didn't find Cambridge that appealing during my visit there when I was 14.
The West Wing
2. We don't get weekends

Yes we do...

The West Wing
4. The town is really quite boring once you've gotten over the initial excitement

Most university towns will be similar.

The West Wing
5. The food is awful and there are limited self-catering facilities

The food at Pembroke is great.

The West Wing
7. We don't get a freshers week, people often get set work in the first 3 days (I was set work on my second day)

We kind of get a week, but lectures start half-way through and it is likely that you will be set work, yes.

PS: And now I've got a Politics essay to write...

I live right near cambridge and lived there for a long time (17 years), i dont drive either and i imagine many students dont, which is why i find the town centre annoying. Also my partner has a well paid job and we still can't afford a flat there. The nightclubs are a bit crap to be honest too. The pubs are ok, but pricey. I guess i'm just annoyed at having lived in an expensive small 'city' for son long.

Off topic, but you annoy me so so so so SO much.
Pass your alevels, then chose a subject, THEN uni.
Dont try and choose a uni before you choose a course. For instance history at oxford is completely different to the course at UCL. You may have the grades for oxford, but prefer UCL's course.
Thats just an example.
Choose a subject then a uni.

One of the things no-one seems to have mentioned is that in order to get most oxbridge degrees you have to satisfy residential conditions as well as the academic ones. Essentially you HAVE to stay in cambridge during term time, and apply for an "exeat" (permission to leave) if you want to go away for the weekend. Which is really causing issues for one of my friends who is at cambridge and the inability to leave for weekends is destroying his relationship with a girl at another uni.

Some colleges are also apparently very strict about visitors staying over.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH. You've encapsulated my feelings whilst reading this thread.

Surely the workload isn't that much more than a lesser uni?
