Do I need Science to be a TA

I really want to be a teaching assistant in a primary school, I have a 4 in Maths, English and Health and Social, but I only have a 33 in Combined Science, is it possible or will I need to get a conditional offer?

You don't need any formal qualifications to be a teaching assistant in a primary school but some schools like you to have English and Maths at grade 4 or above. You can go to college to do a teaching assistant course if you want to gain a specialist qualification. Some people who don't have Maths and English qualifications get funding and/or time off work to study Level 2 functional skills English and Maths at college which is equivalent to a GCSE.

Teaching assistant courses aren't run by universities- they're run by colleges and each one will set their own requirements. Talk to local colleges and see what you need. It's likely they will accept you with these grades.

However, you don't legally need any qualifications to be a TA, so you can also apply to jobs and see if schools will consider you.

If you've just done your GCSEs, please don't worry.

There is loads of time to figure out the path you want to take as you get older. Do you have a college course to start in September?

Awesome.

If you want to be a TA after that, there will be routes open to you. But you may also find health and social care leads you to another career you hadn't considered previously!
