TV's Wife Swap mum Lizzy Bardsley
“We can hold our heads up. You can't look down your noses at us. If you had eight children you would get help from the state.."
THE controversial Wife Swap couple at the centre of a media storm over their on and off screen behaviour have helped propel the show to its highest ratings.
Almost 6m viewers tuned in to this week's episode on the back of publicity surrounding last week's installment featuring Rochdale couple Lizzy and Mark Bardsley.
The show drew in a quarter of the TV audience within its timeslot and, with publicity surrounding the series still continuing, is being tipped to break Big Brother's ratings records for the year as Channel 4's most watched programme.
The appearance by the Bardsleys - which eventually resulted in the swapping exercise being scrapped due to Lizzy Bardsley's concern her opposite number would try to steal her husband - continues to make headlines.
Firstly was the claim Mark Bardsley was working despite the couple receiving £37,000 a year in benefits, then sympathies towards the duo were lessened further by Lizzy's topless photo shoot for the Sunday Sport and by her desire for IVF treatment to have a ninth child.
The Daily Star described Lizzy Bardsley as a "cheeky minger" in one headline after she claimed she wanted to host her own chat show, following the story up with a report today where neighbours claimed they want the couple removed from their home.
But during an appearance on daytime TV Kilroy this morning, Lizzy Bardsley defended herself from critics, saying "We can hold our heads up. You can't look down your noses at us. If you had eight children you would get help from the state.
"If we had all the choices open to us, if Mark was fit enough to work then he would go out to work. But we would still be legally entitled to some form of state benefits - it's a catch-22 situation."
What do my fellow peeps think?
