Few people still say 'chicks'. Birds is used about as much as 'bloke' is for men.
Mostly for slang though, I try and avoid it in case some girls see it as offensive.

Personally I don't But sometimes I have been know to call them fillies or bints. I suppose its just affectionate slang, and I would be very carefull who i used that with as well, I dont fancy a good slap, it hurts.

Actually Chica does translate to girl in spanish just as Fille translates to girl in french. Other interesting translations are:

Ragazza: Itallian
