I’m going into year 9 and want to be top set maths

I just finished year 8 and my school only has two sets for maths, I’m currently in the bottom one. By the end of year 9 I was to be top set because I want to do further maths as a GCSEs option. Any tips on how I could get into top set in one year?

Hi,
For you to move from the bottom set straight to the top, it is all based on progress. Have you done any class assessments of tests in year 8 that would have helped your teacher to understand your abilities in maths topics but your overall understanding and progress? They should have on file your progress so far in maths at your school and understand whether you are ready to move sets or not. Also, you have to work hard and maybe talk to your next maths teacher that you want to move up sets and work hard to get to do further maths. Correct me if I am wrong, but you are picked by your teacher at GCSE as to whether you are good enough to take further maths, so you already need to be in top set and working hard to have access to this opportunity.
I hope this helps you and let me know if you have any further questions I maybe able to help you with.

Do well in maths assessments, that's what helped me go from 3rd set in Y10 to 2nd set in Y11. Behave well during class, they won't put troublemakers in the next set up.

Level 2 Further Maths is not a useful qualification - you are better off aiming for 9s in all your subjects [including maths].

What is the use of aiming for all 9s? 6/7/8/9 grades are all good.

Taking an additional GCSE is not a good use of time - did I say 6s weren't good? I said AIM for 9s - aim high ...

You might also want to ask your teacher about which exam board you're doing as that also makes a difference
