Is it boring?

From what I've heard, York has a reputation for being quieter and more sedate than other unis in terms of its social and night life. Its a high contender on the places i'm thinking of applying to, so if anyone can confidently dispel that idea, I'm interested to hear what you have to say. Safe to say an exciting and vibrant social atmosphere is something i'm looking for.

there are a few places in york such as salvos and stone roses bar, however York is not the greatest at night life. However, Leeds, arguably the best city for nightlife, is about 30 mins away on the train and you can get a return for less than a tenner. So in reality, whilst york does have a nightlife and people do go clubbing in york, there's always people going to leeds

Hi @whatisgood,

I had an amazing time at York, it's a great city to live in and there's always loads going on in the city and on campus.

On campus, there are plenty of student bars dotted around the colleges with cheap drinks- at the moment there are some new outside venues but hopefully everything else will be back up and running in September. Lots of students socialise in the campus bars because they're easy to get to from your accommodation and can be a good place to hang out before going into town.

In town there's all the usual bars that you'd probably find in any city (e.g. Spoons), but there's plenty of choice and unique/independent places too! There are some really nice places on the river where you can have a drink on the waterside which is great in summer.

Maybe have a look on this Timeout page for an idea of places around York. Whether you're looking for Gin places, wine bars, cocktail bars or pubs, there's loads to check out (I think we were told in freshers week there's at least one pub in York for every day of the year)!

York isn't a huge city but there's still a really good atmosphere because lots of people come to visit so there's always a buzz. If you wanted to experience a bigger city nightlife, Leeds is only a short direct train trip away. There are clubs in York as well, which you'll probably first check out in fresher's week.

I'd also recommend checking out our student blogs on nightlife and our city guide for a general guide of things to do in York.

Hope this helps!
