Question 1.1 - I thought the resolution was +-1mm but the mark scheme says 0.5mm. Is this because you can reasonably measure to between half an interval?
Question 1.2 - I understand where the 8 comes from but I don't know why the answer is 8.65mm at all.
Thank you!

Because the main scale is marked in steps of 0.5mm
1mm steps at the top and markings half way between them on the bottom.
1,2
The 8 because the reading is to the right of the 8mm mark and also to the right of the 'halfway' mark which is 8.5
Then the scale has rotated 15 units making the reading 8.5 + 0.15
