Just keep swimming 2.0 - keep_drowning's first year university gyg

Well hello friends!

Introducing me:
Heya, I'm keep_drowning/Al (neither of which are my real name ). I'm 21, a born and bred Londoner, and I shall finally be starting university in September. This will be my third gyg, after taking a hiatus over my gap yaah (where I did not find myself, but did physically find myself in the middle east somewhere and North America), and I'm actually really excited to document my start at university!

Introducing university:
So I'm going to be studying at LIS (yes, the one you've been seeing on social media over the past couple of years). LIS (the London Interdisciplinary School) is a brand new uni, offering a one-of-a-kind degree: Interdisciplinary Problems and Methods.

Why LIS?
I really struggled trying to decide what I wanted to study at university. Back in the day it was Maths and Physics, and more recently it has included Sociology and Biology. LIS offers an interdisciplinary degree. Subjects are learned from across the disciplines (arts, humanities, sciences) and the knowledge and skills learnt here, are applied to solve real problems. LIS offers the opportunity to study virtually everything I have ever wanted to study, but without the fear that my knowledge will be too surface level

Previous grades:
GCSEs: 6A* 3A 1B + B in add maths
AS Levels: 4As + 2Bs (taken in 2 different years (2017 + 2019)
A Levels: 4A*s + A* in EPQ (public health related)

My hobbies/interests:
At the moment, I'm a super boring person. My hobbies are virtually non-existent, but I'm hoping to work on that at uni. I really want to join a couple of sport clubs/socs (perhaps boating and netball?) as well as getting involved again in theatre/acting.

Goals for the year:

Do well academically

Find a good work/life/uni balance (that is, if I actually can get a job)

Develop personality from non-existantness

Sort out health!

Spend time with the family (the joy of going to uni in the same city you grew up in)

Important dates:

11th September - My accommodation contract starts (I plan on slowly moving my things in over the following 2 weeks)

27th September - Transition week

4th October - Term starts!

Post history:
#1 - 5th September
#2 - 12th September
#3 - 26th September
#4 - 2nd October
#5 - 12th October

Erm... so yeah?
Perhaps I'll update as I prepare for university over the next 3 weeks :dontknow::dontknow::dontknow:

Ooh I keep getting those ads for LIS, it'll be interesting to see how it actually compares to the marketing! Good luck for first year :h:

Thank you!
#1: 5th September 2021 - 22 days till Transition Week

Hey hey
So it has been a good week. I flew back from Canada Monday night/Tuesday, and spent a lot of week just enjoying life back with the family and seeing a couple of friends.

On Friday I went to my dad's for lunch which was nice. Whilst I was there, I had a call with the student support person at LIS who was lovely and we discussed support for when I start uni.

Today (Sunday), I finally did the massive "uni haul" shop with my mum and her trusty car. We went to Asda and the Wilko's and I think I've brought all the essentials?

Spoiler

The uni hall tsr.jpg
(Okay, I can't work out how to upload photos properly and enlarge, but that's a snap of what I got)

Asda was pretty stressful. I find shopping quite stressful anyway, and it was super loud and there was some kind of incident with a lady who was shouting and it was a bit much and I ended up having a panic attack once we had left.

I don't have much uni stuff happening this coming week. It's also the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashana) from Monday night - Wednesday night, so that will take up a fairly big chunk of the week! My dad's offered to drive me to my accommodation next Sunday, so I'll try and start getting things sorted then I guess.

Hope people have had a good weekend (and enjoyed this weather!)

Hi this is all really interesting. I did not know about the gyg threads so I'm really glad to have stumbled across it. It seems we have a few things in common. I'll be attending university local to where I was born and bred and have lived for most of my life. I'm going to USW that has 5 campuses spanning Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd. I'm a Cardiffian myself but will attend one of the campuses in Pontypridd. Being a mature student and a parent with a mortgage etc etc, I will however be commuting to uni. This is not an issue for me at all as lots of students commute between Cardiff and the Pontypridd campuses. There are excellent public transport links and I can also drive if and when required.

In addition I have been thinking about what societies I might join and I have 3 in mind at the moment. Netball, rowing and the ornithology and nature societies are currently on my wish list. 😊 What I actually manage to do is another matter but hopefully I will have fun.

I have definitely been inspired now to start my own gyg blog for my first year and will follow yours with interest also as I have a passion for science and solving current real life problems. I think it's super exciting that you're at brand new university and I expect it will be fascinating to see how it develops and progresses. Not to mention the bragging rights you'll have to say you were one of it's first/earlier students. 😊

Anyway all the best with your preparation and continued settling in back on home soil.

P.S I'd love to go to Canada one day. It would definitely be a dream come true I think.

Hi!
What course are you going to be studying at USW?
How far away is Pontypridd from Cardiff?
If/once you've started a gyg, please tag me - I'd love to follow along on your journey!

Canada is such a gorgeous country - 10/10 would recommend to visit!

Hi. I'm about to embark on a BSc in Natural History. The campus I'll be studying at is just under 9 miles away from where I live in Cardiff. It's about 20-30 minutes by car and approximately an hour by public transport, so not too bad. I'll definitely be doing some practice runs before term officially starts. I'm also going to go further afield when it comes to going on course trips. So that will be interesting. For those I expect to travel with my cohort though from the campus.

I expect I'll start a gyg in the next few days so I can share the next couple weeks of preparation.
#2: 12th September 2021 - 15 days till Transition Week

It's been another good week (though it's felt quite busy)
I have no idea what I did on Monday, but Rosh Hashana (the Jewish new year) started on Monday night, so I had dinner with my mum and cheese (the brother). Tuesday and Wednesday were Rosh Hashana, so I (finally) went to synagogue and had dinner with my uncle, aunt and cousins who I hadn't seen for a long time.
On Thursday I finally had a doctor's appointment and then I wandered around my local shopping centre trying, but ultimately failing, to find some stationery I needed.
And then today, Sunday, my dad drove me and my boxes to my student accommodation. I quickly unpacked, briefly met a few girls living on my floor, and then rushed to go to Brighton for a friend's birthday picnic.
I'm sleeping at my mum's tonight, and then tomorrow I have a job interview :s-smilie: and then am going to my accommodation and actually sleeping there!

The accommodation is nice (photo will be uploaded next week!) - the room is small but not too small? But it feels like there isn't much storage space so I think I'm going to have to be creative!

Ooh, also did the online registration on Friday (so I can finally see my modules for the year!) and it's all beginning to feel so real!:colondollar:

I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead!

Ooooh it sounds all so exciting now what with moving your stuff into accommodation today and enrolling Friday. I'm sure Freshers will be upon you before you know it. Best of luck with the job interview tomorrow.
Ookay, as promised, a photo of my room (in its messy, slightly chaotic state )

if that photo ends up actually showing

edit - it did not - I'll try and work out how to get it to work
edit 2 - well, now it's an attachment but oriented incorrectly.
We give up

Posting to subscribe to this blog.

Your course sounds really interesting and I like the idea of interdisciplinary learning across the arts & humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and trying to make it applicable in solving real life problems. Hope you're settling in well if you've already moved in to uni halls.

Btw, I'm in my third year at York studying Social and Political Sciences and you can follow my blog here. Good luck with your studies!

#3: 26th September 2021 - 1 day till transition week(!!!)

Oh, how the time has flown.
I've spent half of the past 2 weeks at home and the other half in my accommodation, getting to know people and the area.
There are 3 others on my corridor (and 2 or 3 elsewhere in the accommodation?) who will be at LIS with me, and they're all very lovely.

On Friday a group of us went to the Fresher's Fair at Queen Mary's (we theoretically have access to their clubs and societies), and it was nice getting to actually meet people in person! We briefly met up today for dinner/late lunch and it's beginning to feel very real.

I also was successful in applying for a job, so the past week or so (and this coming week) has been full of online courses and training - and I officially start next Wednesday!

Next week's update will hopefully be a lot more detailed but :colondollar: and I hope everyone is enjoying what may be the last of this wonderful (but muggy) weather!
#4: 2nd October 2021 - 1 day till term (actually) starts!

Oh ma gosh.
It's already been an entire week, and we've not even properly started, but I feel so tired!

On Monday, we started bright and early with some "networking" (know as for me: awkward and kinda overwhelming socialisation). The morning was spent I think doing icebreakers? And in the afternoon we went on a scavenger hunt around East London (my team came second :h:) followed by a chill in a local park.
I wasn't in on Tuesday because it was Succot (The last Jewish festival of the festive season), so I had quite a chill day.
On Wednesday, we had a drama session (which I guess was team building?) and it was honestly a lot of fun!
On Thursday, we had a long day - we spoke about student support, had a laughter yoga session (was very strange) and then had some sessions about journaling, identity, and then an art session. In the evening, a group of us went over to the student accommodation that most people at uni are in, and we ended up wandering off to the roof terrace of the building (insane views) and then hung out in someone's kitchen till very late.
Friday was a very cool day. We had been split up into groups, supposedly based on our interests - we knew this was happening, and that we'd be going to different locations, but we didn't know where.
Turns out, my group were going to a chocolate workshop! In the evening we had our Founder's Feast (read: bougie meal - honestly the fanciest meal I've ever eaten in my life), which was really cute. I was pretty hungry though (because being a gluten free vegan means often meals are just veg), and treated myself to a vegan magnum which was 10/10.
On Saturday I had my final training session at work, and then spent about 7 hours doing prep work for the week (they are very big on prep work).
And now it's Sunday! I've done all of my work except for one piece, so I'm going to go to my mum's for the day.

I hope everyone's had a great week!

Sounds like you've had a busy week even though you haven't started classes yet like myself.

I've had quite a mixed week tbh. Highs would be me restarting driving lessons again as I've been struggling to find a new instructor in York and get a test booked in (all of that has since been sorted) - it's nice to be driving again, albeit I'm rather rusty atm in terms of my driving abilities. Lows would be me catching the dreaded Freshers Flu which has triggered my hypochondriasis - I've been doing regular Covid tests anyway which came back negative everytime and I don't have symptoms of Covid thankfully. Atm, what's really bothering me is that I have a sore throat and I've literally popped into Morrisons as soon as it opened (we don't have a pharmacy/shop that sells an extensive range of medicine on campus :frown: ) and I got some cough mecidine, lozenges, and a few other things which is helping.

What's not ideal is that I have an in-person lecture tomorrow in the afternoon and I still feel a little rough, but thankfully there's the option for us to catch up online once the lecture has ended. I also have a seminar for the same module and a supervision meeting in-person the day after and hopefully, I'll get closer to feeling myself again even if not quite 100%.

Well done on starting driving lessons again! - I find the idea of driving terrifying and have yet to start anything.
Have you been feeling any better?
#5: 12th October 2021 - Week 2 Day 2

How has it only been a week and a half?!

I'm not going to go into a daily dive this week, because I feel like that might end up a bit dull.
Ookay, so classes started - so far they've been okay. A lot of the Quant (quantitative measures) work we've had so far is basically a repeat of A Level Psychology, so those lessons have been quite dry, but I'm enjoying Qual and I'm currently 1 lesson in to a 4 lesson Econ course which has been quite interesting so far - but it's definitely something I need to focus on, because some concepts are taking a while to actually stick.

We had a group assignment last week that felt like it went down the drain. No one had done any of the prep work when it came to the time we scheduled for the meeting, and we ended up creating the powerpoint and presentation the day it was due which I would love to not have a repeat of.

I went to football last Monday which was really fun, and I want to try and go regularly, but I think we'll have to see how busy I end up.

Work has been a bit :colonhash::colonhash: - and it's not like there's anything wrong with it (except it can feel quite chaotic at times), but I'm not enjoying it, and I'm only a week and a half into the actual job (after 2+ weeks of training) and I already want to quit.

Erm, really don't know what else there is to share at the moment :groovy:- I feel like so much has happened but that there just isn't so much to share?!

Hope last week was a great week and people stay healthy and have a great rest of this week!

Thanks, re-starting driving lessons can be terrifying, but thankfully I've managed to find myself a good, friendly instructor.

I'm feeling significantly better than I was which is good, but this Freshers Flu is definitely going round as I know people who are feeling under the weather and there were some people missing in my politics seminar group yesterday.
