I would say a bit stronger than challenges. Challenges can be given a positive spin, tribulations generally less so
Synonyms for tribulation
affliction, agony, anguish, distress, excruciation, hurt, misery, pain, rack, strait(s), torment, torture, travail, woe

Downsides to?
Always makes me sing the song from Jesus Christ Superstar

“Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
Don't disturb me now, I can see the answers
Till this evening is this morning, life is fine”
