How to be more popular at sixth form

In secondary school I was very unpopular, quite possibly the most unpopular person in the year. I was always as friendly as I could possibly be with everyone, helping people in class if they needed any assistance and people would often text me about work. But the moment that they no longer needed me for school help, no one would have anything to do with me. Is there any way I can be more popular at sixth form? Tysm for any replies x

I had the exact same experience. Eventually I gave up caring about being popular since people would only use me when they needed help and nothing else, just kept my head down and stayed by myself. Not a solution I would recommend especially if you don't like being independent or being by yourself a lot.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’d love a group of honest and trustworthy friends who respect me and like me for more than just my grades. I used to be part of a small group but I got so fed up with how they would bully me about my grades I just stopped talking to them. Older people always say that youth is the best and easiest time of our lives but for some of us it just isn’t x

Be really really smart. To the point where you don't even need to try that much.

Youth isn't the best and easiest for everybody. To have a group of honest and trustworthy friends who respect you, you don't need to be popular in Sixth Form. I had a small group of people I used to stay with, however I was NEVER popular. Just by watching how people behave, you can tell who would be trustworthy as a friend and who wouldn't be

My advice is wait till uni to have a proper social life, just have a close circle of friends at sixth form and focus on your studies

Trust me, being popular at secondary/sixth form is not something to be aiming for. 95% of the people you see now you will probably lose contact with as soon as you start university. Right now make a small group of friends and focus on achieving the top grades so you can get into a top-tier university for whichever subject you're passionate about, and then you make friends there which you will probably stay in contact with for a very long time.

Thanks to all for your responses! I totally agree that at sixth form my priorities should be on studying and building up my personal statement to get to a Russel group uni. Im just so sick and tired of having no one to walk up to and chat with when I arrive at school in the morning, feeling unwelcome when I sit down at lunch tables and having anxieties when the teacher says that we need to find a partner/group to work with as I never get picked. For once I would love to have these things. I always help anyone, forgive people even if they’ve said/done something that’s really hurt me but I’m still yet to find the smallest of friend groups that respect me for who I am.

Understandable, felt the exact same through my A-Levels. Not a nice feeling.

What do I need to be to get some friends then? I’ve tried being friendly l, trying to start conversations, helping people with studies, listening to people when they need to vent but it’s got me nowhere. I’m not saying that I want to be the most popular person in sixth form, all I want is to find an honest group of friends.

This is called people using you for your intelligence and they are not your true friends. I get it that feeling popular makes you feel validated and that your presence matters (because I used to feel like that) but in reality, these people who come up to you for help are not your true friends. It is so much better to get a good group of friends, even if it's small that's fine, but these friends should support you and accept you for you not make fun of. You would rather spend your time and energy on getting good grades than being popular. Being popular does not get you anywhere but grades can take you further

Try asking to revise with you or make plans with a group of your classmates

In the most respectful way possible, you're letting people use you and walk over you. They're taking advantage of your kindness, almost like some kind of charity service. It sounds like they're thinking "oh I know, I'll go to <your name> because they always help me when I am in a sticky situation".

i gave up on wishing i was popular the moment year 8 was over! i was bullied throughout primary school, as well as year 7 & 8 now i can for sure say that having two close friends is all you need. social interactions exhaust me and i could never keep up with the demands of being “popular” and “outgoing”.

i used to (and still do) feel incredibly lonely at times, but i mostly prefer my own company and the company of those i actually have a connection with. i barely have the energy for anything else!

i’m about to start sixth-form too and although my situation will be a little different to everyone else i’m not coming in fresh from my GCSEs but i don’t want anything other than people i can speak with casually. what i really want is for me to be able to keep my head down and my motivation to work hard up.
