I figured this was the best place to put this (even though I'm not a Glasgow student sorry :P). What is the snow like at the moment? I'm supposed to be coming up next week for an afternoon job interview and am kind of worried about getting there!

I'm in Newcastle at the moment and had massive issues getting back from Edinburgh last weekend and don't want the same problems in Glasgow with something more important! Would it be wise to stay over the night before?

I'd suggest staying over the night before if you can. Still a lot of trains getting cancelled at short notice, the station was absolutely packed on the way home from uni today...

It's just a sales job but the basic salary is pretty good so fingers crossed  If I get it it means I won't have to spend all my money on train fare up to Edinburgh/Glasgow just to stay in the loop!

I'm getting a bit far ahead of myself though and already looking for flats :colondollar: where is good to live!?

Sorry for all the questions!

I'm graduating this year... but I REALLY don't want to do the whole graduation thing, as in, putting on a dress, wearing a funny hat, standing in front of a bunch of religious nutjobs and one ******** of a VP while he taps me on the head with another funny hat and says something in a language that neither he, nor I really knows, whilst some guy wraps a cape around my neck.

Seems like a fairly stupid way to end 4 years of rational, considered academic studies - with irrational, 'tradition'-based jiggery pokery.

What's the alternative?

You know you don't have to go to graduation? You've technically got to apply to get your degree and then you just tick a box saying "I do not want to attend the graduation ceromony"
then they just give you it

Aw well what sort of area are you looking for? I love the west end but it can be a bit pricey... I'm looking for a flat to share with a friend next year and not really sure where to start either tbh.

Awesome, thanks.

When and how do we apply?

I imagine once they start making plans for graduation - they ask who plans to attend and how many guests they'll be bringing etc
I've no idea when it happens, but before I got to resit 3rd year (because i'm a dick), they tried to force me to graduate with a designated degree, they gave me a form there and then and my advisor said "I presume you won't want to attend the ceremony" (he was right) and told me I should just tick the "in absentia" box, but if you want to graduate - ceremony or not you DEFINITELY have to fill out this form
I imagine this'll be done in around march or so

oh and i can't be arsed with the whole ceremony bull**** either, BUT I know my parents would enjoy seeing me graduate, and being there with all the friends i've been through thick and thin with for the last two years (i had to resit 3rd year because i'm a dick, so i made a whole new bunch of friends that i'll be graduating with) makes it worth it

i'm almost certain it costs £25 to graduate even if you don't go to the ceremony which is also bull****, but they'll definitely point this one out to you at some point approaching graduation time

Just nowhere really really rough really.. I love the West End but it is quite pricey! Think my max budget would be about £425 per month. I could afford to move now if I really wanted to but I'd rather have a job sorted out beforehand to give me some kind of security in being able to afford my rent in a few months time!

It's really hard knowing where to start really because it's such a big city. I would know exactly where to live if it was Dundee or Edinburgh but I have no clue with Glasgow! I've only really been to the city centre and the west end and have no idea about anywhere else.

Meh... I've seen graduation ceremonies. You're up there for all of 3-4 seconds, so I really don't see what my parents would be missing.

Also I'm graduating with a BEng to start a PhD, and most of my close uni mates are staying on to do an MEng, so I'd be graduating with most of the people in my course that I don't REALLY talk to... so not really bothered about the social aspect of it tbh.

hey i'm not arguing, I've always hated these award ceremonies, but fact I KNOW my parents enjoy them, and I WILL be graduating with my friends, that's the only reason i'll be attending.
If I was in the same position as you I probably wouldn't go either.

Is one bedroom okay? I've seen a few in the west end and city centre you could afford with £425 or less...

http://www.findaproperty.com/searchresults.aspx?edid=00&salerent=1&areaid=5928&bedrooms=01&maxprice=425&radius=2

And this might help a bit if you can't keep track of what's where (I can't :colondollar:)

One bedroom is fine although I was thinking that I wouldn't mind sharing just to save some money  (shared houses/flats seem cheaper).

That guide is a massive help thankyou!

£425 will get you an amazing flat if you share
imo you're overpaying if your flat costs anything more than 325, and even then that's a bit steep
