Maybe you can shed some light on this burning question:

Glasgow is FULL of AZNs on campus during the day, where do they all disappear to when it comes to nights out? :beard:

They're usually still in the library tbh :h:.

how early did you have to be in for a seat? I'll be in by half 8 tomorrow so I didn't anticipate a problem but considering it took so long today, I'm not so sure :/

I was in at half 2. Ive done it for a few days and got lucky when someone was leaving that I just happened to be hanging around the area. To get a seat easily I reckon 8am is when you need to be in, I got here at around 8 and there were a few empty seats in the level 4 annexe.

jeez, i live an hour and a half away so getting in at 8 is a push  need to learn not to get distracted at home...

Yes. Glasgow, in a partial bid to appear to be an 'international university', and in a partial bid to to be money-grabbing bastards, frequently rejects home students who wouldn't pay a penny in exchange for international students who pay £11,000 and upwards per year.

It's absolutely disgusting.

Who'd have thought that getting free university education would disadvantage Scottish students because universities whose principals have dollar signs for eye balls don't want anything to do with students who aren't pumping in insane amounts of cash in fees.

Still advantages you at Edinburgh. They specifically say in their brochure they like home students, who haven't gone to private schools, who haven't gone to single sex schools, whose parent's don't have higher education... I tick none of those boxes so tbh I wasn't exactly surprised at my rejection!
Original post by PerigeeApogee
I don't think that's right either. I tick all of those boxes, but I wouldn't like to think that if I applied and got into Edinburgh, that my success would be down to acceptance by pity.

An application should come through the universities door with no name, no nationality, no gender, no race and no status of their previous educational establishments.

It should contain their grades, their relevant qualifications and their personal statements.

In the interviews that follow, the interviewers should be banned from discussing anything that isn't directly related to the applicant's grades, their relevant qualifications, the relevant aspects of their academic and professional backgrounds, their personal statement and any technical questions related to the course they've applied for.

Any information other than those things is absolutely irrelevant to university admissions, and its presence would only prejudice the admissions system.

I don't want to be advantaged by being a Scottish student whose parents never had education, who never attended a private/selective/same-sex school. I don't want to be disadvantaged by any of those things either.

I want my admission to university to be based on my achievements and my suitability for the course, which should be ascertained without reference to these things.

I completely agree it's not right...but it is what happens and you just kinda have to accept that and live with it

:yep:

Na in all seriousness, I can't seem to do any work if I'm not at that place.

Oh I'm the same. I can't concentrate when I'm studying at home at all.

Level 3 is pretty dead up until about half 9 but I got in at 10 past 8 today and the upper levels were packed.
One day I'll get one of those pcs right by the window on 10, one day :moon:

Yes, get in. :five:

Where does it say that?

I tick all those boxes and didn't get in.

In their prospectus  at least it said it when I applied 2 years ago

Just because they prefer those doesn't mean if you tick all that you'll get in!
Anyone know if the printing is free in the Med school ?
Original post by G8D
I'd be surprised.

A general pro-tip -- especially if you need a computer -- is always to head to the Kelvin Building instead, I've not seen it full once during revision this far.

Believe or don't believe me all you want, I know what I read!

Don't remember them being as bold as too state it clearly, but they do give preferential treatment to (off the top of my head):

People in Edinburgh
People whose parents didn't go to University
Generally, people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

So these people won't need to score as highly as someone who doesn't have these disadvantages in order to get an offer. Of course, you still will need to be pretty impressive.

When I got my rejection through, on the back of four unconditionals, the lawyers I knew (I was a law applicant) were openly sneering about Edinburgh's policy, most thought it went a bit too far. FWIW, I do think you need to take considerations of these things. Attaining high grades are a lot harder for some people than others due to circumstances beyond their control.

Yeah, it's in their prospectus. However, I honestly don't think you can read too much into it. A girl from my school got accepted, I got rejected. So it's not like they reject all single sex private school English applicants - at the end of the day, my predicted grades/personal statement/application in general just wasn't good enough for them. I'm not saying it was nothing to do with the selection criteria, I just don't think I can blame it entirely on their bias considering there are people who get in despite this - and having met a lot of people at Edinburgh through various societies, and a lot of them coming from very similar backgrounds to me, they clearly don't reject everyone who doesn't tick any of those boxes.

I don't agree with their policy anyway, although I admire their efforts to widen participation in higher education, it's an important goal!

Oh yeah, I don't think I fully got rejected for that! 30 people to every place for Eng Lit...bloody nightmare trying to get in!
Can anything be as good half?

It was up on their website when I applied back in '07. A stated preference for 'local' students (which I believe they defined as being anyone north of the Tyne).

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that you meant that! It is crazily competitive there! I kind of resigned myself to a rejection before it happened. I just wish it hadn't been the same week as my Durham one, that was a horrible week. Although luckily, the Glasgow open day was very soon afterwards so that cheered me up, as it made me remember why I fell in love with here in the first place.
