I'm finding most places in town pretty crap these days, any recommendations for nightlife in city centre?

Been to Karbon a few times on a Thursday and it's still quite busy, if you didn't like it beforehand you're not going to like it now obviously. Was at Bamboo last Wednesday as well and the £1-a-drink brought a crowd in. Sauchiehall st. has been dire, though. Couture (which I usually like, I haven't found many others that do) hasn't had the club bits open whenever I've popped in and we've usually just headed to the Garage. Places are definitely less busy during the week, though, but the promo nights tend to be busier as you'd expect.

there's always at least one really busy place every day bar maybe monday where i can't think of anywhere

tuesday - kushion, karbon, buff
wednesday - bamboo, arches
thursday - karbon, garage
friday - abc
saturday - everywhere pretty much
sunday - bamboo, sub club, sometimes buff sometimes it's dead

i refuse to go to bamboo now, i was there for my mates 22nd back in june and for some ridiculous reason i was doing double shots of their vodka. i can't drink vodka anymore at all thanks to that night, the smell makes me wretch instantly. also i kinda broke some of the wooden slats that they have running between the rooms because i thought it'd be a bright idea to try and do some pull ups on them. i've been once since (didn't drink though, was drunk enough before going) and they still haven't fixed it... whoops

but that's just where's busy.
they're still mostly ****, though to be fair i always end up going with people who smoke which leaves me on my own for long periods of time

Welcome to the club  I can't look at the stuff without wanting to throw up after a particularly horrific ordeal in 1st year which resulted in me losing all memory of an 8 hour period and waking up feeling like both my head and stomach were about to explode.

ugh, bamboo truly does give the worst hangovers, it never used to bother me because i don't generally drink in clubs, i have a few beforehand, get in and that's me; too many experiences of people bumping into me and spilling my drinks taught me that. However, the last few times i've been to bamboo i've come pretty much straight from somewhere else where i haven't been drinking, and that means trouble.
just thinking about it now is making me shudder
Anybody got any good suggestions for parking near the uni?

There seems to usually be parking near QMU/Ashton lane but those are parking meters and i'm not sure how much that would cost if I was in uni in day.

Uni gardens is free, the meters on uni ave/behind reading room are 30p per hour, but you can only get 4hrs before you have to go get another ticket. The meters on Kelvin way are more expensive. Infront of the edcuation building theres a few free spaces, round the corner from viper and bbq kings is also free, and anywhere up/off QM drive is usually easy enough to get parked in, but its a 10-15min walk back to campus.

Thanks for the info
Jesus H. Christ on a bike, we're having some proper rain in the West End today...
The last really nice day I remember was 2nd June. The day of my last written exam.

I get back to Glasgow on 10th September, I cant wait!
I'm back in Glasgow nowwww and have NOTHING to do and a broken laptop. Gah! I'm in the library now. On my fecking birthday. Lol! Anyone fancy a mini-celebration?
Unfortunately, Swine Flu has turned the NHS into a bit of a circus right now, so any free time I once had is now strictly off of the agenda for further notice.

Wow, not even I go into the library on my birthday. I will be going tomorrow though, because I'm that cool.
Hey everyone,
I was just looking around the internet for jobs. I am not in Glasgow at the moment and did not work during 1st year but am looking for something now and have a few questions.
Did any of you work next to uni? Where? How many hours did you manage? Were you flexible with your hous?
I also looked at the SRC page as they seem pretty flexible. Any idea who can apply for jobs for example in the bookshop?
So you see I basically want to know everything
It would be great if some of you could maybe just tell me a little bit and how it influenced your studies.
Thank you

They sent us emails about various things that they needed students on over the summer- mainly a phone line for raising money off of alumni, manning the clearing line, staffing conferences that were ongoing etc. There's occasionally paid placements in places like the Hunterian Museum or similar, but thats usually for folk who want it for their careers. Glasgowstudent.net's jobshop is relatively good, but there was usually the odd vacancy in/around Byers road, although with the recession that might be less likely. Also try the NHS (I work there) as theres loads of hospital admin jobs which require remporary/part time staff, and Gartnavel/Southern/Western are all in close range of the university. I usually did about eight hours a week at university and the work were happy with that as long as I upped it around holiday times/over the summer when they needed me more. I was really lucky in the sense the pay was (and is) very good by anyone's standards, the hours were flexible, and I had a near-full time job in the summer when I needed it. The downsides were that 90% of my shifts are at night/weekends, and the pandemic has meant I've been incredibly busy, but thems the breaks.

I ended up not going. Was only transcribing interviews (the most tedious activity I have ever had to do) so never went to the library. Sadly, I will be going up on Monday again.

Does second year still start in the middle of Fresher's week with FY1 shadowing? There's also a super-fun group bonding exercise.

I don't start until the 20th and I start with an SSM (although they haven't been allocated yet.)

I start on the 16th ASAIK, actually I'm gonna do pre-reg online now. What does this FY1 shadowing entail? :s-smilie:

You're allocated to a hospital and you get to follow them round for the day. If you're in a less busy hospital, you might get the chance to take blood or practice things on each other. I was in a really busy ward though so I spent most of the time standing around. :frown:

Make sure you have your Glasgow postcode in your personal details or else you'll be allocated to one really far away! Someone I know from Kent had his home postcode in and got Wishaw, whereas his flatmates got Gartnavel. :p:
