You're allocated to a hospital and you get to follow them round for the day. If you're in a less busy hospital, you might get the chance to take blood or practice things on each other. I was in a really busy ward though so I spent most of the time standing around. :frown:

Make sure you have your Glasgow postcode in your personal details or else you'll be allocated to one really far away! Someone I know from Kent had his home postcode in and got Wishaw, whereas his flatmates got Gartnavel. :p:

haha I'm almost certain I've put in G3 so hopefully it won't be somewhere miles away. Sounds like good fun, but I'll have to do an emergency "hospital clothes" dash into town, none of my other clothes fit me!

I've finished pre-reg now, do I just sit and wait?

Does anyone else have to manually input their course codes for registration this year? It doesn't seem to be working for me.

Yup, sit and wait.

I just did it and it seems each year has something extra to pass. First year had 3 things (exam, coursework, MILE), second year had 4 (exam, coursework, OCSE, SSM) and third year has 5 (same with 2 SSMs.) Yay...

1st year - exam, coursework x 3 and MILE

2nd year - exam, coursework x?, OCSE (oh GOD), and SSM?!

Ah ******* mushrooms.:woo:

The OCSE's fine, it's basic memorisation. You don't have to diagnose anyone!

I had 4 pieces of coursework in first year as the first one counted (in which I got a D which pulled my other 3 Bs down to a C1 overall, grr!). There's 5 pieces in second year. :p:

1. Critical appraisal (it's a bit of a joke)
2 + 3. usually on pharmacology (watch all the pharmacology books magically disappear...)
4. Family project, this runs throughout the year and is due before Easter.
5. Ours was on pathology, I'm not sure if it always is.

Very few/if any people fail the SSM. I did limb anatomy which was a lot of work but it was useful.

Thats cool  I'm quite pleased with my B3 average in CW, but I was brought down by my two D's in MILE and exams. I shouldn't have been drunk for the first three months! How many SSMs are there to choose from? I might send my mate a wee email in advance to borrow him or his textbooks, he's a fourth year pharm at Edinburgh!

Erm...there's about 15 I think. Anatomy has the most places by far (80) whereas some only have 2 spaces.

The one I want for september only has 2 places. :frown: Its on intensive care. I'll probably end up with anatomy again even though it's my 6th (last) choice!

hmm I wouldn't mind doing anatomy...(famous last words). Intensive care would be fascinating! Aww now I do just want to get back and into some work, I'm not good when left to sit around for three months!
Sup peeps... FW teams have been announced by the SRC. Ze question now is, do I do it or let go of my Glasgow fascination and actually start worrying about my current seat of learning? Methinks one more fortnight of madness before I grow up can't hurt.
Oooh! I'm doing it with the SRC too - I wasn't even going to apply because I knew I was too late but I emailed them about volunteering for something else and they offered me the chance to apply late. I only sent it in yesterday :awesome:

So I guess I'll catch you on the 8th then? :h:
Do it!

I'm very not hardcore enough to be a fresher's helper - my inability to nap means I'd spend the week like a zombie from lack of sleep.

I'll be in the Red Cross tent in the fresher's fair so come say hi!

They sent us emails about various things that they needed students on over the summer- mainly a phone line for raising money off of alumni, manning the clearing line, staffing conferences that were ongoing etc. There's occasionally paid placements in places like the Hunterian Museum or similar, but thats usually for folk who want it for their careers. Glasgowstudent.net's jobshop is relatively good, but there was usually the odd vacancy in/around Byers road, although with the recession that might be less likely. Also try the NHS (I work there) as theres loads of hospital admin jobs which require remporary/part time staff, and Gartnavel/Southern/Western are all in close range of the university. I usually did about eight hours a week at university and the work were happy with that as long as I upped it around holiday times/over the summer when they needed me more. I was really lucky in the sense the pay was (and is) very good by anyone's standards, the hours were flexible, and I had a near-full time job in the summer when I needed it. The downsides were that 90% of my shifts are at night/weekends, and the pandemic has meant I've been incredibly busy, but thems the breaks.

Hey, thanks for all the information.
I will look into it

Unless Balliol College wants me, then I guess you will. I'm not sure if I'll be team leader this year again, but if I am, then hopefully I'll have outbreaks of friendliness among my bouts of moaning. Had a word with a friend of mine who just happens to be the SRC president this year, but when the teams are made up, I'll look out for you!

Someone just told me it's going to be expensive :emo:

Could you maaaaybe pm me if you have the time and let me know the sorts of things you had to do? I have a rough idea but I'm not 100% sure really.

Congrats on the mod-ship too.

Every VP is different in the tasks they expect, but that'll be made clear in prep week- I'm sure Morven has ideas of what she wants from us. Even if I can't be a helper due to other commitments, I'm sure I'll pop along for a bit and annoy everyone. Be prepared for lots of carrying of things and packing 4,000 bags for the new starts- other than that, most of it is about having fun, giving guided tours and having some banter on the night buses, not to mention going to bed at 4am while blind drunk and catching 4hrs when you can. You'll need to have enough cash to see you through 10 nights of partying or so, but its all worth it in the end- although I won't lie and claim it'll be cheap. We get a free bar on the last night, so if your liver holds up, all the lack of sleep and turning up at 8am while still clearly not fit to be there seems like a small price to pay- if not, theres enough free stuff (I got three hoodies last year) to convince you otherwise. You'll love it, trust me...

And I think you should do it. Because I don't know anyone else who is. Then again I only know you by your student number so that probably doesn't count as knowing someone either

im confused. i applied to be a freshers helper and i got the freshers helpers 2009 email yesterday, yet i thought you had to go for an interview which i didnt have. does this mean that i am a freshers helper or that the email that went out was to all the applicants. :curious:
if it was with the SRC then you didn't need an interview so yeah, you are
Yeah, the SRC didn't interview this year, although I've been told we had way more applicants than we needed- last year only about 10 were rejected, this year was a bit more, despite us actually having six more helpers than in 2008. The GUU usually gets about 150 applicants for 100 places, so they usually interview, but not always.

Kinky, although now Gavin's not there anymore I'm not so tempted.
