So, Glasgow is winning the 'roughest city in the UK' poll on TSR by a mile. More votes than Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Belfast and Newcastle combined. Stereotypes alive and well then.

London is also doing very well. lol

Today I bought myself dissertation biscuits to help my writing.

Biscuits eaten: many

Words written: few

Bugger.

Are these biscuits specifically designed to help you with your dissertation or custard creams or ...?

Blackpool is pretty ****e.

I went to Blackpool the other day, it was really odd, I couldn't work out if I liked it.

I was trapped in the Lake District due to the landslide so we spent the week touring around for free on obscure train routes to York, Preston, Oxenholm, Carlisle, Blackpool (not in that order).

Also I bank with RBS who told me I didn't have an account with them (despite me banking with them since 14) and so I essentially only had £60 in cash to get me back home. Pretty strange week.

It was good enough for John Lennon's teenage holidays. :pierre:

That's because I doubt many of them have ever actually been. I spoke to this guy who was at Eton College once:

Me: I'm going on holiday to Blackpool.
Guy: Why? It's a dump full of chavvy women on hen nights.
Me: Have you actually been?
Guy: God no, of course not!

:lolwut:

I went to the cinema on Friday to see 'Snow White and the Huntsman'. The huntsman was an alcoholic, violent Scot :facepalm2: The media perpetuates these ideas. And because there's so many more English people than Scots, of course no one in England is going to want to admit they stay in the roughest place, and so will vote for Glasgow to make theirs look better.

Nail. Head. Hit on.

Had the same discussion with a friend of a friend in Edinburgh. She was mouthing off about how grim Glasgow was. I asked when the last time she was there (she is American), and she responded she had never been. She'd heard too many bad things and was 'too scared' to attend. Amazingly, she wasn't happy when I told her her hometown in Wisconsin was a hole, and even though I'd never been, I just knew. Turns out, she's a) not very good at debating and b) a moron.

On the bright side, it keeps a certain percentage of morons out...just through blind fear :P
I remember talking to somebody on holiday who didn't know where I was from yet, and when I mentioned Glasgow spoke about "going through it on my way somewhere, and being told by my dad to roll up the window and shut my eyes so I don't make eye contact". Funny image of a car full of kids with their eyes squeezed shut to keep the junkies out.

Next person I see calling Glasgow rough is getting chibbed.

Currently doing robust trials in order to determine - scientifically- the superior dissertation biscuit. Initial results suggest custard creams are not suitable, crumbly as they are they end up with me getting covered in crumbs. Furthermore the high sogginess factor experienced when dunking is an issue.

I haven't heard that in years

"captured on television cameras"
"roaming through the streets"

They make it sound like a wildlife documentary.
Right guys, need some help if you can give any.

I'm a prospective student applying for English Literature but I only insured my offer thinking at the time I didn't want to go. I have now realised what a massive fool I've been because I knew all along I wanted to go to Glasgow.

Only problem is I can't get any accommodation because the uni tell me they only look at people who have firmed their offer for accommodation. What do I do now? Do I just look for private accommodation? :s-smilie:

Thanks for any help you can give me.

You might still get accommodation. The major thing you need to do is to get Glasgow as your firm, because otherwise on results day if you make the grades to get into your firm that's who will accept you on UCAS. The accommodation deadline for Glasgow is a few days after results day so you've still got time to apply post results, you just won't get the best accommodation.

It's very unlikely I'll get the grades for my firm so I'm not too worried about that right now. :P

I would try to change the firm/insurance offers round but I'm outside the seven-day period to change it so I don't know what to do now in that respect. :/

You could still phone up UCAS and see :yep: but honestly accommodation wise you should be fine! I applied on last day you could apply for accommodation two years ago and still got it :yep:

I believe you need to make sure both Universities are happy to do it. One to release you and the other to accept you. I suggest calling Glasgow first. This may also only be the procedure if you've made your firm offer but want to change. Glasgow should be able to guide you.

I swear to **** the papers didn't tell you how bad it was. 3000+ people outside of Preston station for over 12 hours. We were told that the rail company had ordered ''alternative transport'' and then 5 hours later they said that actually they couldn't get hold of any coaches and no one would be able to travel until tomorrow (unless they organised external transport).

In the end I just wanted to get back home man, there was 4 people getting a taxi and a guy came back and shouted that there was space for one more, no one moved and then I threw caution to the wind and joined them. I made like 3 new friends and travelled a lot of miles that night. Pretty fun tbh. One of the guys wanted just to get to Carlisle (and the rest of us to Scotland) and we stayed the night at his. He literally brought 4 strangers home to his wife and we stayed in the spare room.

It was really weird. Funny how good friends you can make when in stress. Everyone just tries to help each other.

That sounds stressful but kind of brilliant. The kindness of strangers renews my faith in humanity.
