I had to look up what a verb was last week.

Doing word?

Honestly, I think that grammar is relatively important, but I wouldn't waste my time worrying whether something should be a colon or a semi-colon.

Like when people write lists using semi-colons, I have no idea how that is meant to be different from a list with commas. Frankly, I don't care.

I think grammar is important. It's just easy to become complacent with one's mother tongue. We don't have to think as much about speaking/writing as a non-native speaker would, it's just natural and a bit lazy.

The only reason I'm having to Google what verbs/adverbs are is because I'm attempting to learn the basics of another language.

The only things that bother me are possessives (which I'm not even sure I know how to use entirely properly) and when people spell grammar as "grammer"

Are you learning Norwegian?
Original post by G8D
I dislike misuse of works like there, they're, their and then, than and you're, your. But I'm not really sure if that's grammar, I'll have to Google it.

Ja, jeg snakker litt norsk nå.

Arcadia will be able to tell you (although she may still be currently in grammar rage)

You speak a little Norwegian now according to google, excellent work. It's Oslo Glasgow lawyers go to, no?

I'm a proud prescriptivist, as is Katie Lowe. :unimpressed:

Surely an English Language course should be teaching people the correct use of English? Surely such a thing must exist because we teach children literacy skills and literacy is the key to education and education is the key to ... everything. :daydreaming:

No. Because what is the correct use of English? Really if you want to look at how our language has changed even going back to Shakespeare let alone Proto-Indo European you'll see it's impossible to have a correct use of language because language is constantly changing and adapting. Most of the so called rules are even wrong because they assumed we come from Latin whereas we really really don't!

I don't know why I'm right, I'm just pleased I am/is.

Linguists believe everyone speaks with grammar just different grammars.

I'd agree if people spoke with consistency

However, the classic "did/done" mix-up shows that some people just don't bother to learn the difference and use the word interchangeably. If you're going to do that you might as well just stop using one completely

Technically no...it's acceptable to be interchangeable, the language will gradually move to some groups using none!

What are you doing up at this time btw? I'm just back from a night out!

I'm a working man these days, I have to get up at 6am to go to work (all changes today as I've finally found a flat and I'm moving hooray!), I had a pretty rough week so I was asleep by 9.30 last night.
I'm disappointed in myself

Hey  I have a Science Fundamentals book you could have if you want. I bought it 3 years ago when I was in first year but didn't use it at all ...

:hugs: poor you having to wake up so early! It's bizarre, last night I skyped a friend who was home from a club while I was getting ready to go to a club, and then when I got back from club you were up for work...time differences are crazy things!

Ooo what's the flat like?

Anyone in need of a bunch of second year Philosophy texts? Trying to get rid of them. I still need a couple (Hobbes' Leviathan is apparently useful for History honours) but I've got a few I'd like to sell dirt cheap if anyone wants.
Holy cow I'm writing a dissertation this year!

I feel far too childish to be tackling such a studious piece of writing, very scary stuff

So how is everyone settling into the new academic year?

Och it doesn't bother me getting up that early really, it's just the commute from my aunt's to work that was a nightmare (>90 minutes each way), where I am is about half that, which is fine. It's quite nice, big living room, big kitchen and really close to Clapham Junction station.
Actually bedroom isn't huge (I saw some really big ones too), but it's certainly not small

Stick 'em into the SRC second-hand bookshop? Usually if they're in the week before students come back they sell like hot cakes. Alternatively stick up notices in department boards or sell them to the John Smith (although the price is rubbish unless you take it in store credit).

It's ridiculous how long it takes to get internet. You may as well try and get internet put in before you even own the flat, would happen faster then!

Aw, I love the Italian university system. At Glasgow, miss 3 tutorials out of 22 and you were meant to lose your ability to sit the exam for the class. In Genoa, "students who have turned up to less than half of the classes may be penalised." Also plagiarism "may" be punished. Not planning on skipping every class or plagiarising, but it's nice to know that I can.

That would have been a great idea. Currently watching Dexter in the library like the shiftiest hobo in Glasgow.

How's Calgary?

Literally best three weeks ever, done so much :h: work is insanely hard though, got two assignments due tomorrow, a test and an assignment the week after and then at least an assignment a week after that. How's Eng Lang in Glasgow?
