Ahem- I'm returning early just so I can go to my fifth Daft Friday since 2004. It's that good. Whether the GUU board are still talking to me (note: public chastising of the lack of talent in GUU management not clever idea), is another matter.

I wouldn't have thought so Then again, the president doesn't exactly have a squeaky clean record in the GUU...

I'm actually reasonably friendly with plenty of members of the GUU, some of it going back four or five years. Some people are pretty capable, I hasten to add- but the Chesterfield auction is a joke.
Those not wanting to read a rant should look away now:
But yes, Daft Friday is almost always very well run, a huge effort by the commitee, and a night well worth going to, which I look forward to attending it this year.

I thought it was pretty poor last year, too overcrowded, too expensive for what you get (they painted the walls basically), and the coat rooms were full so I was walking about all night with a suit jacket on (not comfortable). It was just a huge disappointment compared to what it was hyped up to.

I think timetabling was last year's issue. They put lots of events on around the same time, leading to various rushes around the building. There was little on after 4am as far as I recall, and people drifted away. A bit of a better spread from around 10pm might have kept people better spaced out. The problem with it is, it's now a huge chunk of their earnings, with the catch 22 being that because they lose so much every other week, they need to get the 2,500 people in for DF to make cash back. As a result they ramp up the price and cut down the quality of the offering, meaning they stand less chance of making money back- pushing it into a downward spiral.
However, the cost and effort of covering virtually every wall panel in hand-painted murals is not insignificant, and takes dozens of people months to organise. In Oxford, if you denote anything as black tie and do the place up/invite someone famous, £30 is very cheap indeed. Mansfield College's recent black-tie event (although it did include a meal) was 8 hours, not 12, and cost £80 for tickets. Our end of year college ball will be something around the same. For what you get in the way of events at DF, although they're less than maybe five years ago, the price is still in no way unreasonable.
John Briggs told us to stay clear of you all this week
Good luck
I'm lucky - no exams until May
Haha, yes! Steer well clear of the lab (where incidently I am typing this from...) unless you want to have to listen to lots of fourth years talk about their dissertations in vaguely panic-stricken voices.
Hurrrr both. Criminal tomorrow and Contract on Monday slightly more prepared for Criminal but... that's not saying much.
My brain is fried. Sad.
Hope it went well
Had one Wednesday (Law & Gov, 2nd year SISL really..) that was horrid, today's was Property and I've got Juris on Monday. I think the school of law just uses the same days for everyone and puts us in one after the other- we didn't start 'til half 4 today.
TheOneWho
Could be worse, you could have a dissertation due in on Thursday.
Good point and good luck.
Although I'm currently worrying about reaching that unfortunate stage...

2nd year as well, how did you find property? haha failed law &gov so badly, not looking foward to getting that back! nothing I wanted came up

Thanks, it eh, didn't tho. Paper was horrific, I panicked, realised most of the stuff I had covered hadn't come up, and er... panicked some more! Managed to answer three questions but I'll be lucky to pass. Was a wee bit bad! Good luck to you tho, and I hope the other two didn't go too badly.
And Craig, you forgot: DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.
Thought it was ok, considering I had neglected it for Law and Gov. Couple of questions threw me completely. How did you feel?
And aye, Law and Govt. was a disaster, gutted when I saw the paper. Everyone I've spoke to has been the same...
Yeah, thought it was reasonable, weren't many questions I had no idea about, but loads where I couldn't decide between two options!! haha law & gov was relying on a wednesbury/deference question.. but somehow managed to not go over jowell & lester.. so was forced to answer a question on jowell & lester without knowing what their views were
What is Jurisprudence? Nobody's given us an actual definition yet. Or they did and I was asleep.
Regarding Criminal: PENULTIMATE DOOM, DOOM DOOM AND THRICE DOOM
Jurisprudence fills the empty core in your legal education
It's philosohical really- 3 topics are: 1) The relationship between law and politics, basically the nature of law in society 2)Legal reasoning- different views of what law actually is and how we identify it (when you do Delict next year, you'll go "wtf" at Lord Atkin in Donoghue v Stevenson and they won't tell you why someone can totally rewrite the law like that until 2nd year...) 3) Different theories of what law's function is (I actually haven't showed up much for this topic).
It's all terribly interesting, but writing an exam on such a wide subject is daunting. Especially when you've got to cram revise the whole course in 2 days...
I thought criminal was interesting, but my exam was pretty poor.

Cheers.
That sounds like me in Law & Gov actually- 3 questions answered, all pretty poorly. I found the 1st year exams hard purely because I didn't know what to expect really- and the courses are pretty wide so cherry-picking is a necessary danger...
dosed

Aye, multiple choice throws me like that and had me doubting myself!
You're not the only one I've heard that didn't know about Jowell and Lester, knowing the change in the law should be pretty sufficient I guess. I wrote about Art. 6 and the liability of public authorities. The first is 5 years out of date because I forgot the two latest cases and the second is pretty much a massive ramble. Dreading the results of that and tax.
