Speaking of folk we went to school with, when I studied Law there was a girl in my class I went to school with but never spoke to, never really saw her through that.
When I changed to Maths in my second year I actually had a physics lecture first, and I was walking up the stairs in the lecture theatre when I clocked one of my good friends from school that had studied Medicine in first year but hated it and decided to take Maths as well instead (though we weren't in the same maths lectures in first year). Quite strange but cool as we never really kept in touch after school and so neither had any idea we were doing the same thing.
Anyway we've drifted apart since (mostly because I didn't go to lectures for 2 years), but about 2 or 3 weeks in some other guy started sitting with us, who turned out to be my mate's allocated lab partner.
I ended up living with that guy and his flatmate from first year in halls for 2 years and they're pretty much my best friends these days, so all I can say is that I'm glad I had a class with an old school friend, it's not all doom and gloom for some of us.

from what i remember in one of my tutorial groups almost everyone bar me and two or three others were mature students. i don't think you should worry about it, there will be quite a few in the same boat. unless things have changed in the last 5 years of course

Chances are with the recession its likely there will be even more mature students just it niggles me at times. I feel very old these days.

You'll be very young next to some of the mature students.

And yeah, there's plenty of you older lot that study law

Oh I know I will just feel a bit weird surrounded by 17 year olds. See when I left school I went to work so I was surrounded by people who were older than me. So naturally I feel more comfortable with older people. And I work with the elderly and disabled so I have to have a more mature attitude to things.

Anyway my UCAS track changed tonight to an unconditional. Woo was getting worried there.

There will be very few 17 yo's, I should know I was one of them. As for maturity, that depends on who you encounter, there are some very immature people who are mature students and vice-versa, but i'm sure if that's the sort of crowd you are looking for you will find them.

No one to do nothing with.

I'm not a student yet either but I post here anyway :proud:

I'm all alone too

join me?
I'm only a couple of months shy of 24, but some of my best friends at university are three years younger, and I met them a couple of years ago when they were freshers helpers. I know some 25 year old graduates who shouldn't be left in the house on their own, and some teenagers who might've already seen more than most ever will. It's about keeping an open mind really, if you think you're going to only be comfortable around older people, then that'll probably influence how you act in the first couple of months at university, and it might be your loss. At a guess I'd say only around 10% of the total number of freshers will be 17 when they start, and that number will drop to a couple of percent by Daft Friday. There are quite a few who were not far off of 19 when they finished school (English and N.Ire) and then took a gap year so will be 20 or older when they start.

Yeah 0404343m. I know myself that I am daft for worrying about it especially when really there isnt that much age difference. I think more what is bothering me is the fact that I feel like I am late to the party at getting into uni at nearly 23. Perhaps the problem is I feel a bit jealous of all the weans sorting their life out a lot earlier than I did :P
I'm a little bit older than the average fresher but I think making a big deal of your age is a bad idea. Just roll with it. Maturity is not = to age. I think the more people go on about their age the more of an issue they create. If you want everyone to know you're older and think you're "oh so mature" then sure go on about it all the time, but watch as your friends disappear! If you chill out and remember age is just a number then you'll get along just fine.
I will also be a mature student but I do not really worry about that.

Firstly, what brings us together is not the age but the fact that we want to graduate. And secondly, as said before, it does not matter how old you are but how mature you really are. There will be some eighteen-year olds who are definitely more mature than older students. I do not want to reduce anybody in rank... it's just the true facts of the matter.

By the way, considering the topic I have to mention the http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/maturestudentsassociation/

Just to clarify I wasnt really bothered about it before until Kevin Francis made quite a big thing of it at the Access awards night! Then I started to worry I would be like the granny of the group when I just want to get pished to cheesy pop!

Never mind I know myself I am being daft just I worry about stupid things at times. I think its all anxiety about going to uni. I feel a bit overwhelmed considering that I never really though I could make it yet somehow I have.

I was becoming convinced that I would be a personal carer wiping up bodily fluids and picking up screaming dementia patients for the rest of my days.

Daft Friday?

Black tie ball, being going for over 100 years in one form or another, union gets redecorated, £40 tickets, open till 6am, bands, ceilidhs, casino, games etc etc, 2500 capacity, free breakfast if you last till the end, usually around 10 days before Christmas.

That said, the price seemingly goes up and up each year for less and less. There used to be a one complimentary drink, champagne reception, free food and a proper breakfast. This year there was none of that, less decorations, drinks had all went up by a good 50p-£1 each, and breakfast was a bacon roll. Used to be amazing value, but the worse run the union becomes, the more money they lose and the more they look to recoup on DF in order to keep them solvent for another year. They probably turned in tens of thousands in profit last year.

I'd still go if I were you though. I've been to five in six years though, so whether I'll go again remains to be seen. The QM also holds a Christmas Ball, but it doesn't totally decorate the place or offer free breakfasts, and it's not black tie (at least it wasn't) and it's a on a smaller scale- much more akin to a regular cheesy pop but with other things thrown in, then again the tickets are only about £10-12 though.
The best thing about Daft Friday is that it's a bit different, even if it has gone downhill. The QM rolls out Cheesy over and over again, just making it slightly longer than usual. I'd like to see something different once in a while. Then again, if all your friends are QM'ers you will probably end up there no matter what.
Bah! Trying to fill out a form for the Work placement year (MSci) and websurf is offline :emo:
Thanks.
