So, will anyone be looking skyward tonight? Clear night over Glasgow and the Northern Lights may be visible over our part of the world. Stirling saw them last night :awesome:

I'm taking a chance and having a wander out tonight. It would be unbelievable to see them over this part of the world.

Would be a hell of a sight over Glasgow.

Just lucky I might see it if it does happen given that I'm always up till stupid o'clock...
Man I wish I was in Gkasgow tonight. I wonder if they'll be visible in Edinburgh.
Early shift tomorrow, otherwise I would stay up to see them. I'm beside a motorway anyway, too much light pollution here probably...
That might be a problem when I think about it - I'm about a minute away from the Clydeside Expressway. Hmm...
Hope for a powercut/ned trespassing on a power station..

Whereabouts do you live in the West End then? The Expressway is about 50m in front of my living room window :beard:

The BBC forecast has completely changed in the space of a couple of hours FFS. From cloudless until 4am to cloudy from 10pm :colonhash:

Whiteinch unfortunately. :o:

The expressway is right at the top of my street so it'll probably be a pain to see it even if it isn't cloudy

Oh right. I live in Thornwood, just before the roundabout where Dumbarton Road passes underneath the Expressway.
My problem is all my windows face south, so I'll have to go out to see them. Although now I'm dubious whether there'll be anything to see anyway.

I can't even get the site to load.
Doctor of Philosophy Websurf is weird. It wants you to enter course codes, which you don't do, and it can't quite fathom that it's not SAAS OR you who pays the fees.

Also, restructure has claimed at least one prominent staff member. Professor, holder of well-known chair, FRSE, FBA, at Glasgow for sixteen years, has upped sticks and left for another Russell Group university because he isn't happy with how the place is being run. Shame, he was one of the best we had.

I'm not sure what to make of this restructure. I mean, the academics all hate it, but I suppose they would- many have been there 15+ years and they aren't exactly fans of change- if they were ambitious and forward thinking they might be doing something that wasn't being an academic. Muscatelli has a good track record as dean, VP, and principal of Heriot Watt too, and he saw Edinburgh mess their restructure up, so he should know what he's doing. That being said, all these people who are against it are smart folk- can so many people be wrong? The camp isn't happy, that's for sure. And if our student satisfaction drops and people decide not to come to Glasgow- we could find ourselves far from where we want to be or think we should be. That being said, Edinburgh have messed things up pretty badly and have horrendous student satisfaction, and it doesn't seem to be stopping them. Interesting times ahead.
My Websurf seems to be as crap as ever.

I think most students were confused about the restructure. Or rather, they were told it was going to happen (through an email) and didn't know anything about it. I knew about it because I quite like reading the Guardian, but that was my only real source of information on it. Students don't particularly like change either, but for the most part they just can't see the point in it.
I've been looking at it in detail- and I don't think students are going to notice much. If anything, broader colleges might mean more module choice within college as they work together to see where they're overlapping. It might mean, with fewer budget groups, the weaker and smaller departments get neglected. It's fine when you have economics and business of roughly equal size. But if you were to have 50 academics in one against eight in another, it's a different story. The main problem could be admin support- they're trying to cut admin costs, so it could mean less support when things go wrong- History think honours should remain unaffected but pre-honours might have one administrator across seven modules where they had two before. At any rate, I was told without a hint of sarcasm that it'll be the graduates in a decade that see the benefit of this- the next two years could be pretty messy indeed. Just wait until the redevelopment of the Western Infirmary site comes along, that'll be hell. I think the 2002-2008 sort of period might be the best the university has in a while. A few shiny new buildings shouldn't paper over the cracks.

I'll believe it when I see it! My department are still in the mindset of two, and cannot seem to communicate effectively with each other. Maybe that will change, who knows.

New buildings won't paper over the cracks. I see it like bog-standard regeneration projects which just deflect attention off of the real problems and on to the new shiny things. When really no one effected wanted the new shiny thing in the first place.

Or maybe I'm just overly cynical?
I received my Welcome Pack yesterday and the websurf email today!

I have a few questions though;

- I did the pre-registration bt it said that I did not yet have to add my course, so I didn't. When about would I have to do this?

- My friend told me that she had a letter with information about her teacher, or something of the sort. She doesn't remember whether the letter was in the Welcome Pack or with the Websurf envelope. Does everyone receive this letter? Is it normal that I didn't receive it in my Welcome Pack?

And a totally unrelated question:

My flight is on the 9th. I'm going with my mum (she's staying for 2 days to help me move in) and we're going to buy all the basic stuff (I live abroad so I have to by pretty much everything). How many plates/pots/pans should I buy? If there's 5 of us in a flat, it'll be weird for us all to have 2 pots each...

You can either add your own courses or your advisor will do that when you have your meeting with them. They are there to help you with your choices and then approve them for you so you can complete the second stage of registration.

Your friend probably got her advisor information. Everyone should get that so they can arrange a meeting with them.
