Aurora.
Hi everyone  I just had my advisory appointment today and to my shame it was actually the first time I'd set foot on campus... I really really like it there and now I'm all excited :p:

Just to say I love the song in your sig  Mainly because it's the only song I know of with my name in, and that makes me feel cool

Haha it's good. And he says it better than anyone else, I think.
Quick question...

I'm going into second year and i was wondering if during freshers week we had to go and register in Hunter Halls like we did last year? I'm trying to plan when i'm coming back to Glasgow but don't know about registration and when it is? Anyone help?

Nope, just pre-register on websurf and meet your adviser to approve courses like you did last year and you're away, they might even do this without meeting you. Loans/fees through SAAS should be paid automatically if you've filled the form in online correctly for this year.

Go on Gumtree / SRC website or when you're next up the west end go to a little shop called news 24 or something (it's a corner shop) its near tinderbox turn left and its down that street they have looaaads of flats advertised.

His nibs is driving up to Glasgow tomorrow to look at flats.
I've searched on Google Street View and found Tinderbox, but when I turned down the street it's on the corner of I couldn't find any paper shops (though Google's probably out of date anyway!).
Did you mean turn down the street with Tinderbox on the corner or is it the other side of the road?
slightly strange

Thanks Steverockin. I think I've worked out how to get there. Turn left out of University Avenue and keep walking.

What course are you doing? It is better for some than for others. What they have available (and for how much) is available online.
It seems alright for law books, but it gives sellers a raw deal so I'm just selling mine myself I think.
Oh yeah, they don't pay you until it has sold?

Either way, I would just advise everyone to use the library. I've never understood this buying books, especially before the start of term. Things like English lit are a bit different, but for most the library should be sufficient. Teaches you not to hog the books and not to leave everything to the last minute, also teaches people how to actually use the library which always comes in handy.

Ah sorry, I didn't know it was online. I'm doing biology, chemistry and psychology for first year. Going to have a look now, thanks

Yeah, and they take a third as commission. So there is no guarantee you'll get anything (or anything near what it could sell for) and they're basically charging you for shelf-space. There are better ways of doing it.

I buy my all my course recommended books, and some others, mainly so I always have them when I need them (and I need each one probably for several hours each week). I do use the library as well though, for the additional texts/casebooks etc. Living at home probably makes the decision to buy the books easier, meaning I don't have to spend 3 hours trekking in and out of town to do a bit of studying on my day off.

That's what I was thinking. If I was staying in halls I'd probably be more likely to just use the library, but since I'm staying at home it just makes more sense to buy them, I think.
I got the books when I was up at university, rather than using my day off to come in if I couldn't be bothered. Obviously everyone is different, but unless a book really is needed constantly I wouldn't buy it.

...until it comes to the week before an assignment is due and the books are being hogged by your lovely peers for days at a time? I remember laughing when the law department told us that people had been caught deliberately putting books back where they weren't meant to go so that nobody else would be able to use them, but after experiencing assignment/exam time, I can believe it!

People do that, as well as trying to continually take out 4/24 hour loans (which has been stopped now), and numerous other things to try to get the books for that little bit longer. I have never had that much of an issue though, even at exam time. I have almost always managed to get the books I want. It's all about managing your time and knowing how to use the library successfully.

If you know you are going to need and use the book all the time, then that's fine, but so many people buy all of the 'recommended' books on the reading lists and never even open them. Once you have been in the class for a couple of weeks it is possible to know what books you really will use.
