Optometry Entry Requirements/Work Experience

Hi,
I am currently studying the access course in Science and previously have obtained a D*DD in BTEC extended diploma in Applied Science. So, I have no previous experience in Optometry and would like to apply for 2022 entry but I’m not sure if the fact that I’ve got no experience will affect me being offered a place as I’ve asked multiple opticians but all have said due to covid work experience is unavailable for atleast a year. So I’m a bit worried about whether I’ll get accepted. Also, the entry requirements for the access course is 136 UCAS points which means getting 45 Distinctions in the graded units so I was wondering if the University of Bradford are lenient is any sense so does we have to obtain 45 Distinctions in all the graded units? As I’ve already obtained a BTEC extended diploma would the UCAS points I gained from them contribute to the UCAS points I need from the access course or will I have to obtain a full 136 UCAS points from the access course alone?

I think you should be fine with having no experience at an opticians as long as you mention other experiences. Just Mention if you have worked before or any other skills that would be useful as an optometrist in your personal statement. UOB do accept access course students as far as I know.

I think your ucas points in access course will be take separately as it’s an entirely different course from btec.

Is it possible to get in with only high grades, IELTS and non-related work to medical settings?:;

Hi @Graphite_rascal ,

How are you? I can appreciate it is really difficult seeking opportunities in the industry at the moment and have heard of similar difficulties from many students.

Do keep a look out for any opportunities, like you've already tried. I personally have known students who studied without having prior experience, but this can be due to many reasons and each situation is unique.

Even if it's something small, it's better to start somewhere so try do what is in your means. I wish you the best of luck, and if you have any questions I can try my best to help or guide you to the correct individuals
