Some antibiotics prevent protein synthesis by targeting the ribosome.
Ribosomes in eukaryotes have a different structure to prokaryotes.
In no more than 50 words, explain why these types of antibiotics can be used to treat bacterial infections without effecting human cells.

Hi there,

This is the 50-word answer you need.

An antibiotic that blocks protein synthesis in bacteria is streptomycin. This drug binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and causes misreading of the genetic code, so the wrong protein is synthesized. Bacterial ribosomes are smaller [70S] than human [80S]; these antibiotics cannot bind to the human ribosome.
