Starting ice hockey at university

Has anyone had experience starting playing ice hockey at uni? I've never played before but have been thinking for a while that it looks fun, The issue is I can't borrow kit or anything so if I want to start playing i've got to sink hundreds of pounds into this sport for kit + membership for a sport that i've never played before. So yeah was just wondering if there was anyone that started playing at uni and if it was worth it.

Ice hockey is incredible!

I played at university but had been playing since I was 14 so knew what I was getting in to.

At my university they split the ice in two - one for people who can play and one for beginners. They gave the beginners sticks and (iirc) helmets to use then let them at it. After a few months many of the beginners enjoyed themselves so much that they bought the kit and "graduated" to the experienced side. I would be surprised if your university didn't have the very basic equipment because, obviously, it's such an expensive investment.

Your university might also have roller hockey which is also a lot of fun.
