Will an 8GB Macbook Pro be good enough for the Computer Science course?

My first year begins next week at Royal Holloway. I've been debating whether I should stick with 8GB of RAM or pay extra for 16GB. I can't upgrade the RAM later on so I thought I might as well go for it and use an external SSD for more storage. However, I'm not sure whether 8GB will be good enough to handle the tasks from my course or not. I haven't used a Macbook before either.

I'm sure someone asked this exact question last week, was that you? As explained last time, any specialist software that will not run on basic hardware will be made available on departmental workstations so you do not need to be concerned. The bigger question is why you would buy a laptop that is ripping you off to get 16GB RAM, which is basically the standard amount these days. Getting an external SSD for storage is also a waste of money - SSDs are useful for applications that constantly need fast access speeds (the OS, frequently used software, data science, games...). If you're just using it to store files that you'll be accessing from time to time, you may as well get an external HDD.

What is 'good enough' now, might not be good enough for 3 or 4 years... As it can't be upgraded, maybe best to try and future proof?
