πŸŽ“πŸ¨ Welcome to my blog! πŸ¨πŸŽ“

Hey everyone - thank you for popping in and I hope you stay around!

My name is Reatha and I have just gone into my junior honours year in Psychology. "Junior honours?" I hear you ask. Yep! You see. In Scotland, most of our degrees are 4 years long with the last two years counting towards our honours (and in terms of my Psychology degree allows us to get BPS accredited).

But that's the boring stuff... Read on for more!

A Bit About Me
Spoiler:
Show
I'm a 20-year-old student who comes from the middle of nowhere to study in the big city. And although my social anxiety has gotten way worse over the last year and a half (the joys of COVID huh?) I'm gonna try and not let that stop me! I'm also a pagan so that's fun to know I suppose?

Hobbies
πŸ’š Burlesque and Cabaret Dancing
πŸ’š Reading
πŸ’š Baking and Cooking
πŸ’š Knitting (and like 20 other arts and crafts activities!)

Volunteering
I currently am a member of the Young Adult Carer Advisory Group that is run by Carers Trust Scotland. This is to try and raise the awareness of young and young adult carers in Scotland by running campaigns and consultations.

I am also currently fundraising to allow me to complete a voluntary internship in Mongolia. This is entirely focused on mental health and I can't wait for June to just arrive so I can do it!

Academic Summary
Spoiler:
Show
I am currently studying BSc Psychology with Honours at the University of Dundee. This will be my third year (like I already said haha) and the hardships will realllly start to kick in.

Semester 1
Cognition | Biological Psychology | Social Psychology | Psychological Research Skills 3a

Semester 2
Individual Differences and Psychopathology | Psychology of Language | Developmental Psychology | Psychological Research Skills 3b

My Goals This Year
Spoiler:
Show
βœ”οΈ Try and keep my average of a 2.1
βœ”οΈ Get healthier! Both physically and mentally
βœ”οΈ Perform in a few of my group's burlesque shows
βœ”οΈ Fundraise for my internship

Hey, I'm reading psychology as well! It's nice to hear how the same course differs depending on where it is based on. I wonder if you cover more modules than what are included in the standard three-year degree. Do you have a placement year included in the four years as well, or is it the standard lecture content? :holmes:

The lockdown has also had an impact on my anxiety, so you're definitely not alone in that. Hopefully, this year will change things for the better. All the best, and hope you enjoy the days (and struggles) to come!

I'm not entirely sure, to be honest! We do 8 modules in Year 3 and I believe we do 5 in Year 4? However, in Years 1 and 2 we choose 2 other subjects to learn alongside our psychology modules (e.g. in one semester you'd do a general psychology module, a film studies module and a philosophy module). I hope that makes sense at all!

But no placement year, unfortunately, that's why I'm hoping to go over to Mongolia next June for an internship. πŸ‡²πŸ‡³βœˆοΈ Roll on fundraising!

And thank you! It's good knowing (well not good but you know what I mean) how many other people are in the same boat. It seems that many think they're the only one struggling so find it hard to reach out. Here's to the best for all of us! ☺️

Time To Return To Dundee!
Week Beginning: 20 September 2021
(This was meant to be posted on Sunday - but uni life hectically got busier real quick)

The Journey Down
So it has finally come to the week of moving back to the city. A whole 5-hour long drive from my home county where I have been staying the last year and a half due to the whole pandemic situation going on. Honestly, I have been both dreading and looking forward to this for so many reasons. I'm excited to see my close friends again who I am flat-sharing with. But I'm also nervous due to being in the big city. It'll be fine!

On the way down I was asleep most of the time to be fair... Blame my travel tablets for that! But we did stop off at the House of Bruar as a treat for my mum. It's expensive there but the stuff is lovely, not gonna lie. I treated myself to a Gingerbread Loaf Cake and a Selkirk Bannock Cake since I won't be baking for a while whilst I settle into a routine again. May have got a sweet tooth over lockdown...

Official Uni Flat Move-In
When we actually got to Dundee it took a while to find where my flat actually was! It's so different trying to navigate in a car compared to walking everywhere. But once we did it was fine. My flatmates (who I met in Summer School back in 2019) helped us shift everything from the car up the stairs and into my new room. And despite it legit being less than half the size of both of their rooms, I don't actually mind it! It feels nice and cosy!

(It's still a work in progress - aka a bombsite - so I will update you all on my room when it's just a tad bit tidier than it currently is!)

Freshers Week
Anyways onto Freshers Week... (Weekend? Day?) I'm not really one for going out partying and I think coming down to the city whilst there are still a few cases spiking again, it's put me off even more. So for now I'm staying away from that scene! However, one thing I have picked up since my first year is that is definitely worth having a nosy around campus and the surrounding area for some goodie bags. I managed to pick up quite a few this week, all with really useful goodies inside!

I mustn't forget the free food that you can also get at the Fresher's Fayre also! Thank you Dominoes for saving a poor student's pocket!

I'm also part of a Burlesque and Cabaret Troupe. Something that surprises everyone when they find out, no matter how long they've known me for! But yeah! I had my first lesson with them in like a year and a half and I felt so welcomed being back with them all. Hugs were shared... Life updates exchanged... Gloves tossed! It was really fun and the happiest I have felt socially in a long long time.

On Saturday we also went out flyering. Advertising for our upcoming Halloween show: Beyond The Veil! Who says you can't dress up for Halloween in September? We managed to drop quite a few handfuls of flyers out to shops in the city centre, as well as handing them to people interested. Don't worry. We didn't bombard them like certain flyer groups! Now to just practice my act...

But yeah, other than that, it wasn't much of a productive week. (I say as I moved into a city 500 miles away, did a month's worth of food shopping, socialised the most I have in a year...) Here is to the new school year and everything in between!
