About the type of course, I'm applying for mechanical engineering courses it'd be better to have some sort of work experience right?

It would definitely help. Talk about what you learned in your work experience, what you find interesting and how it increased your passion for the subject.

You don't need work experience for engineering - you can talk about things you have done (like projects) in your own time, alongside extra reading, watching engineering stuff etc.
