I’m studying medical science at the moment and want to eventually go into research does anyone know if a PhD would be a worthwhile endeavour for getting into a career like this?

Yes if you want to go into research as a research scientist you'll likely need a PhD - this could differ based on whether you want to work in academia (definitely needed for academia) or industry. If you want to go into research and work as a research assistant or technician in either academia or industry, you won't need a PhD.
