so im planning to apply to biochemistry courses at uni, and in my personal statement, i’ve mentioned astrobiology as one of my interests that drove me to want to study biochem. is that a bad idea to mention another subject/field, while writing a personal statement even if its relevant?

It's fine if you link it critically to the subject you are planning to study. Especially since astrobiology is not a field you can do an undergraduate degree in anyway, it should be pretty clear what your focus is.

You don't have to say what got you into something - you can just focus on the why now
