Things to do in between lectures as a commuter and a non-drinker?

Hi, I'm just wondering what kind of things I can do at uni as a commuter (driving) and someone who doesn't drink or party (since night life is pretty much strongly advertised). I'm starting uni next year and currently in gap year. Just don't want to be in too much of a shock when i get there . And also how to find real, like-minded friends (considering I left sixth form with no one to call a real friend since everyone changed throughout high school). I like talking and hanging out with people.. but dont want to feel lonely or uncomfortable while doing that.

If you already know which uni you want to go to then I recommend checking out their social clubs to find a few that you would like. Most unis have over 100 societies so whether it's chess or Zumba I am sure you will find a club that suits your personality. This is a great way to meet up with people with the same interests as yours.

Be prepared to check into a Travelodge once in a while so that you can stay back and socialise on a Friday evening. No need to drink but being there is going to be important.

Hey

I commuted to university when I was a student and didn't really go out and party much either, I preferred to focus on my studies rather than going out. For Freshers, I didn't bother with the drinking and instead went to the afternoon tea parties and the freebie stalls outside, there's always variety in university events

In between lecturers I'd go for a walk, head into town for a bit of shopping or go to the university gym!

As for meeting real, like-minded friends I'd recommend joining a club or society! That way you're around people with similar interests to you which will make conversation that bit easier. You could even look into becoming a student ambassador, volunteering or finding part-time work on campus, all great ways of meeting new people

I wish you all the best of luck with your uni journey!

Hi there,

I hope you're well

Have you looked into any volunteering opportunities available through your University? This might be a good way to meet people with the same interests as you, as well as help out your local community. Usually volunteering doesn't ask for too much commitment and can often be quite flexible, so just something to look into! These opportunities are usually advertised through your University Student Union.

I hope that's helpful,

Ana
