update #3, sunday 17th october 2021
just coasting on by

evening everyone, it's been a bit of a weird week tbh, kind of feels like everything's just happening around me and i'm not doing anything about it. but hey ho let's just get on with it

attendance this week: 100% (8/8)
times cried this week: 0

uni stuff
mas8091 mmath project: so once again left everything til the last minute, did a tiny bit on monday (like a page of LaTeX) but then spent hours on tuesday doing more in all of my breaks as my supervisor wanted it emailed by 5pm (!!) somehow i managed to get everything done that i needed lol, ended up being 4 pages and it looked quite pretty. had a meeting on wednesday where he basically ripped it all to shreds lol but in a constructive way. then went over some new stuff that melted my brain a little so i don't understand whatsoever, yay. got another fat to-do list for this wednesday which i've not started any of so it's gonna be a fun couple of days for sure

mas8714 topics in analysis: had a zoom on monday at 5 where we introduced dynkin systems and i think i kind of got it? then on tuesday at 10 we had an in-person lecture carrying on from it and i think i understood parts but i was actually falling asleep the whole way through i was sooo tired. couldn't tell you what any of it is now mind you. still haven't started my assignment due on the 29th yikes

mas8715 algebraic topology: this module is actually the bane of my life. got an email minutes before our monday 3pm zoom telling us it would be on wednesday at 5 instead, then at 5 on wednesday got told it'd be thursday at 10 instead, which we can only do every other week, so it was a bit of a mess. ended up having it on thursday at 10, i was so tired and literally didn't understand any of it lol, we were doing stuff on the fundamental group and i was just ??? the whole time. luckily for me (!!) we had a 2 hour in-person lecture 12-2 on thursday as well so had 3 hours of alg top in one day!!! the joys!!! this was a mess as well but i think i sorta got some of it but idk idk. our assignment doesn't get set til the 20th so i don't need to stress about that yet

mas8804 relativity: wasn't gonna go to any of this this week but ended up going to everything :king1: first lecture at 1 on tuesday was long, was about lorentz boosts and it was dead easy, then at 5 we had another lecture but this one was on time dilation, and was once again dead easy. still haven't caught up on what i missed last week but it shouldn't be too hard. had a zoom problems class at 9 on friday which i woke up 5 minutes before and honestly my eyes weren't awake at all lol. but it wasn't too hard. got a test on wednesday worth 10% of the module so i'll have a crack at the practice one probably tomorrow

mathsoc stuff
had our scavenger hunt on monday, i missed all of it cos i was at dance but i met them at the pub afterwards and still had fun, apparently it went down really well and everyone enjoyed it! this week we've got a pub quiz hosted BY ME and my bestie, we still haven't written it lol but we'll get that done tomorrow. i'm excited but also so nervous eek, only quizzes i've ever hosted have been on zoom lol

we had our first netball matches this week! my team (pi-thons) played on thursday against economics, we were 4-1 down after the first half but brought it back to a 5-5 draw, and i scored a goal!! definitely most comfortable playing as a GS, i just need to work on my shooting but i'm sure we'll do that in training. went and watched our saturday team (charlie's angles) play on saturday morning as i was in the sports centre anyway, and they were amazing! proper loving netball lol it's so much fun

dance club stuff
went to tap on monday and we were just going over the comp choreo, for some reason i find it really hard and kept making mistakes but hey ho

skipped jazz on tuesday cos i decided i'm not going back til after auditions (the comp choreo is hard!!)

went to ballet and street today, ballet was lovely as always and i managed to do everything (even if i'm not very graceful lol), and street was very energetic but so fun and i got most of the moves, but i do look so dumb doing it lol i need to learn how to look cool. i'm gonna be very sore tomorrow my legs were very weak afterwards lol

auditions for comps were yesterday and i auditioned for beginners tap (at 9am omg i was EXHAUSTED). the audition didn't go that well and i'm very doubtful i'll make it but hey i had nothing to lose by giving it a go! i'll find out tomorrow but if i don't make it on the team i won't be at all surprised

mental health stuff
doing a lot better this week i guess, not really sure what else to say lol

other stuff
had a cocktail night last night for one of my housemate's birthdays which was a lot of fun! not done a whole lot else tbh it's not been a very exciting week. at least i'm no longer ill finally, just tired ALL the time

that's about it then, feel like it's quite a long update eeek. promise i'll start including pics at some point but i keep forgetting to take them lol

lmk if you want adding or removing from the tag list, see u next week

Sorry to hear you've had a tough week :console:

Do make sure you go and see some of these lecturers for help so you don't get behind.

You CAN do this
(Original post by The_Lonely_Goatherd)
You're not a dumb person, let alone the dumbest person alive! :nah: I'm so sorry it's been such a rough week. Totally understandable to be struggling to take things in at the start of a Masters year, especially given the awful Tuesday you had Be kind to/about yourself! :hugs:

That’s good that your project supervisor gives you guided deadlines for a to-do list at least. Mine just told me it was up to me whether we wanted to plan to have meetings whenever we wanted or to just drop him an email 😂

If you are considering doing a Masters I can suggest Imperial College, Kings College or Queen Mary. However this will depend on your interests. I don't know where are you located by the way.

I am a graduate and have done Master degrees in both mathematics and theoretical physics before starting research. The analytical and computational skills you will get are highly valued everywhere regardless of whatever you will choose to do later on.
I know that Imperial wants a first class before register you for the MSc however even with s high 2.1 they will be good with you...

update #4, monday 25th october 2021
feel like everything's gonna go very wrong soon

hey everyone, sorry this is a day late but i was really tired last night i'll try and keep this quite brief

attendance this week: 25% (2/8)
times cried this week: 1

uni stuff
mas8091 mmath project: once again left everything to the last minute so was in a mad panic on tuesday trying to get everything done in time, only issue was i didn't actually understand anything i was meant to do so i ended up only writing about a page and a half of really bad maths and emailing it to my supervisor along with an apology lol. then on wednesday we went over everything so i think i get it better now, it was a super long meeting omg i really wasn't expecting it to be
Spoiler:
Show
Image
Image

mas8714 topics in analysis: was meant to go to my 10am lecture on tuesday but i was running late and then the bus didn't turn up so it was 10:25 by the time i got to uni so i didn't go. then on thursday i had 2 back to back zooms 9-11 and technically i was there but i wasn't listening at all and didn't pay attention whatsoever so i haven't counted it. so i'm a little bit screwed for the assignment oops. i've done one question of 8, it's due this friday :bricks:

mas8715 algebraic topology: skipped the wednesday 5-6 zoom cos i was still in uni at the time, but i went to the 2 hour in person lecture on thursday and really didn't understand a thing. i think we were learning about the fundamental groups of various shapes but none of it made sense to me oops. then on friday we had a zoom 4-5 which i didn't wanna go to but i did. it was more of the same and i felt incredibly dumb once again

mas8804 relativity: skipped both the lectures on tuesday cos i was too busy doing project stuff. had an online test on wednesday worth 10% of the module grade, didn't expect it to take me nearly 3 hours and i did have to look up basically everything but i managed to get 16/20 or 80% so i'm pretty chuffed with that tbh

mathsoc stuff
hosted the pub quiz with my bestie on tuesday! it was honestly soooo much fun and everyone seemed to have a really good time! we went out afterwards and didn't get back til like half 3 so i was pretty dead on wednesday but it was such a good night. i did the 80s music round i've wanted to do since like second year so i was v happy

we had another netball match on thursday, this time against the medics and we got absolutely destroyed lol. we lost 28-4, they were a really strong team. we go again this week tho!

dance club stuff
very unsurprisingly, i didn't make it onto the comp team for tap this year. i'm very glad i did it last year now, even tho i didn't get to actually go to a competition it was a lot of fun so i'm glad i managed to do it once!

went to tap on monday and it was good! we did loads of exercises at the start which were tough (i don't think i'll ever be able to do wings lol) and then did some new choreo at the end which i really liked

decided i'm not gonna do jazz this year, i didn't really enjoy it the one time i did go, and tuesday nights are quite inconvenient for me anyway. so i'll just be doing 3 styles (which is still quite a lot tbh)

skipped ballet and street yesterday cos i was too tired

mental health stuff
been a pretty good week tbh, i'm just a bit stressed about the uni side of things since i genuinely don't understand a single thing. but i'm just trying not to think about it atm

other stuff
went down to leeds on saturday for a friend's birthday, she had a room booked out in this fancy cocktail bar and it was a really good night! i had far too much wine so i felt a little rough yesterday but it was a lot of fun.
here's what i wore lol

Spoiler:

came back to newcastle yesterday, had a couple of hours to rest and recharge before going to my first ever concert!! went and saw architects with 2 of my housemates and wow wow wow it was so good. i'm so tired now though, what a weekend it's been

Spoiler:

oh also i've got yet another cough so this is my third time being ill in a month. my immune system really isn't pulling its weight atm hahaha

that's about all i've got to say tbh, see you all next week!

Sorry for the late reading/reply from me - been a bit under the weather

I absolutely LOVE those banging netball team name puns  :king1: :ahee: What cool names

Good idea not to overstretch yourself with four types of dance if you're not enjoying all of them.

Awww, your project supervisor sounds so lovely from that screenshot! :moon:

Love the pic of you in the dress :awesome:

I hope you've factored listening to ABBA's upcoming new album into your plans for next week? :holmes: :innocent:

update #5, monday 1st november 2021
current mood: tired

morning everyone, sorry for not posting last night but i was v tired after staying up to complete a job application which closed at midnight  not that anyone reads this anyway looool

attendance this week: 0% (0/8)
times cried this week: 0 i think??

uni stuff
mas8091 mmath project: did all my work for this on tuesday again, spent ages sat in the cluster trying to correct stuff from before and also do a bit of the new stuff. didn't get loads done but i was still quite happy with it. emailed it over and then in my meeting on wednesday we just focused on consolidating stuff which was fine, meant the meeting was actually short for a change! this week i don't have much to do, which is good as i have assignments to do as well

mas8714 topics in analysis: obviously didn't go to any of my lectures this week but i spent a bit of time on thursday and lots of time on friday on the assignment. it actually wasn't too bad as pure assignments go, managed to do 7/8 of the questions and i'm fairly confident with them. reckon i could've had a crack at the last question if i had a bit more time tbh, but it was already half 3 at this point and the deadline was 4pm. hopefully i'll get the results soon as the class is only 7 people big lol

Spoiler:
Show

Image

mas8715 algebraic topology: did literally nothing for this last week. got an assignment due on wednesday that i've looked at and it looks horrific so my job for today and tomorrow is to try and salvage some marks on that lol

mas8804 relativity: did nothing for this last week, gonna get caught up in enrichment week next week and then hopefully start going to the lectures again. still hate the module lol

mathsoc stuff
we had our halloween bar crawl on tuesday, it was quite good fun but the turnout wasn't huge, likely because a lot of people have assignments and also the whole spiking thing atm. but it was still good!

Spoiler:
Show

Image

we faced economics' 1st team in netball this week and sadly lost again. we played probably the best we ever have but they're such a strong team it sadly wasn't enough. hopefully we'll find our form and start winning some matches soon!

this week for our social we're heading to play pool, darts, other pub games like that. i'm not mad excited for it but i'll probably still go

dance club stuff
went to tap on monday, we learnt some funky choreo to runaway baby which i found fun, it was quick tho! i'll go tonight even though i've got so much to do, i'll have to skip it next week so don't wanna miss 2 in a row!

mental health stuff
had a bit of a wobble on tuesday and wednesday, anniversaries of bad times from the past are hard. but otherwise i've been okay. not happy that the clocks have gone back as now we're nearing winter which is always the worst

other stuff
my sister came over on monday so i could dye her hair, i didn't do a very good job lol but she's happy with it. on wednesday night i went out to celebrate a friend's birthday, it was a really good night but i was soooo tired i didn't expect to stay out late at all (ended up out til 2 lol). had a great time tho it was very worth it. uhhhhh can't think of anything else that's happened lol. i've just been completely knackered the whole week

think i'll leave it there, see you next week

update #6, sunday 7th november 2021
made it to enrichment week!

goooood evening everyone, hope you've all had a good week!
next week for me is enrichment week, which is basically just a reading week but since we don't have any reading to do they've just called it this instead? last year they called them buffer weeks and before then we didn't have them so i'm grateful. bit like the half term holidays we had in school which i missed loads when i came to uni. loads of people are going home but not me

anyway enough about next week, here's what went down this week

uni stuff
mas8091 mmath project: didn't do a whole load for this, just some of the consolidation and corrections i was told to do. the meeting was fine, just going over some of the stuff i got wrong and then trying to figure out where to go next. don't have a meeting next week which is nice, got more time to get up to date with everything and hopefully it'll all be good

mas8714 topics in analysis: haven't done any work since i submitted the assignment, but i did get my results back and i got 79%! i'm absolutely chuffed with that

mas8715 algebraic topology: did the assignment on tuesday and wednesday, it was literally so easy to find all the answers online so that's what i did, who knows if i'll get in trouble for it or not but i'd have got 0% otherwise as i genuinely don't understand any of it soooo you win some you lose some. at least i was able to submit something that i know is right lol

mas8804 relativity: went to the library on saturday and did 10 lectures for this (honestly not as much work as it sounds, all the videos were between 6 and 20 minutes long, i was only in the library for 5 hours) so now i'm all caught up and don't have to worry about this for another week and a bit. it's just so annoying how my lectures for this are on tuesdays when i'm always busy doing project stuff, but hopefully from now i'll be on top of things and will be able to go to lectures again (lol)
Spoiler:

mathsoc stuff
had our social on thursday, was just at a pool bar and was very chill, i mainly just played darts with my friend who's in the darts society. i'd never played before and ended up beating her 3 games to 0 so i felt VERY cool !!

this thursday we faced classics in netball and we won our first game!!! i scored the opening goal but we were behind after the first half, and then everyone gave their all in the second half to pull it back to give us the win absolutely buzzing

on wednesday we had a social with netball and football so we could get to know some of the lads, it was a sports social so very drinking heavy but it was such a good night (until my friend thinks she got spiked, she's fine now but it was not a good end to the night)

dance club stuff
on monday i had tap and we carried on choreo to runaway baby, this new section was so hard and i really didn't get it at all annoyingly. still a fun dance to fun music so i still had fun but wow. i'll be skipping it tomorrow tho as we have a maths bar crawl and i cba lugging tap shoes around with me

today i actually went to ballet and street, ballet was nice as always, did some cool choreo to a slow piano version of i put a spell on you, it was pretty chill and i enjoyed it! then in street our class was covered by someone else bc neither of the usual teachers could make it, we did some really fast choreo to beggin by madcon which was so funky but i couldn't keep up with the speed hahah. fun tho!!

mental health stuff
actually doing surprisingly well considering i usually stop functioning entirely around this time of year. keeping busy but still got time to do the important stuff so i'm not getting too overwhelmed. got a lot of good stuff happening!

other stuff
ermmmm what else has happened. went out for food with some friends on friday, we went for tapas and it was AMAZING, the food was so nice and you got so much food for the price! i had patatas bravas, some chickpea stew thing and some mushrooms sauteed in garlic and white wine and it was all *chefs kiss*.

Spoiler:
Show
Image

we went and got coffee afterwards so of course i got a festive one, got the purple one latte which i was so obsessed with last year so i'm glad they've brought it back!

the rest of the week has been pretty uneventful tbh!

still very tired but that's just life lol, see u next week!
