Hi,

Can anyone share experience of SCITT and what their normal 'working hours' in school are? Would you expect to be there e.g. 08:30-16:30 and then do extra work in the evenings? Do you attend staff meetings which go on later than this?

Thanks!

I trained via the SCITT route a couple of years ago.

My working hours did vary a lot, as during some parts of the course, I was only observing and not teaching classes (so my hours were a lot lighter). However, during the peak of my placements, I was in school 08:00 - 17:00 pretty much everyday except Friday, when I would leave pretty much right at the end of the day. Some days, I was staying due to staff meetings, other days I just stayed to get my planning sorted. I also had to participate in parent evenings, open evenings, and twilights - which would run until 6 or 7pm. In the lead-up to deadlines, I probably also did additional work in the evenings.

Edit: to add, after leaving at 17:00, I didn't usually do work in the evening. However, I did do almost a full day's work on Sunday, so my weekend was pretty much just Saturday.

Thanks! I am looking into the practicalities of it all (current job very flexible but facing redundancy and have always wanted to go into teaching, other half also works full time, have an 8 year old who needs taking here there and everywhere...) - trying to weigh up options!!! Very helpful, thanks 😊

We have SCITT students in school and we are flexible about working hours to an extent. Most students will spend at least 8-4 in school just because this is what's practical in terms of setting up for the day and speaking to staff, getting feedback and so on, but if you needed to leave early one day it would be fine.

Our meetings end at 4.15 (usually) and SCITT students have one training a week in school which they attend- this goes on 3-4 usually I believe. There are some CPD sessions which run later but these are optional. On the odd day you would be expected to attend parents evening etc which does run late.

At points within the course you will need to work evenings/weekends usually or stay later in school.

Lots of people do train to teach with children so it would be managable.
