What are the pros and cons of doing a PhD?

I'm thinking of doing a PhD but I hear so many negative things about the whole journey.
Anyone can shed light on the merits and demerits of doing a PhD?
If you are certain it will benefit you in the career you choose in terms of progression and salary then it could be a good idea, especially if you can get a scholarship. Also you have the pros in terms of enjoyment and personal development. However, there are so many ways to make money online now that if you're going to do it, ensure it is for the love of it and not going to start you off on the back foot. I did an MSc with a career development loan which wrecked me financially. A PhD will potentially be far more costly.

You get paid to explore an area you are deeply passionate about, with a good degree of personal freedom to channel the direction of the research.
Very fulfilling working in area where your contribution can make a genuine impact to society.
You get to keep learning & building skills.
Become an expert in an area of future value/expanding need.
Build connections and network with globally respected industry leaders.

A lot is down to the individual candidate, how self-motivated you are & what your goals are.

An arts council paid me to faff about translating cool stuff that I loved

Direct route into my current job, which is also fab

It can be quite lonely. Nobody else at my institution was a specialist in my area, so to bounce ideas around I had to be in touch with people in india, or the US, or Nepal and Bhutan. that's quite a lot of work, even with internet connections (which are not guaranteed in many of these places!)
