As for how far I've gotten, I'm at the part where I'm trying to prove it true for n=k+1.
I have a goal of 1/2 * (-1)^k * (k+1)(k+2)
But after that, I can't seem to get it.

Id factor (k+1)/2 out of both terms (half way down your second page) and combine. You know that that must be one factor in the answer.
