'Iago’s villainy and cleverness ultimately make him admirable.'
•To what extent do you agree with this view?

What points could be included in this question??

'Iago’s villainy and cleverness ultimately make him admirable.'
•To what extent do you agree with this view?

What points could be included in this question??
- his soliloquies- he has loads of them- more than Othello- this enables him to build a 'rapport' with the audience/ involve them in his schemes. Iago uses puns which the audience understands because of 'dramatic irony'- we are 'in on it' with Iago
- It may be viewed that like Hamlet, Iago is a tragic revenge hero
- His plans work easily as everyone else in the play seems to be gullible- we admire 'intelligence'

On the flip side:
- His name is 'Iago'- Spanish for James- Elizabethan context- Spanish Armada, etc. So people wouldn't like him
- He uses a lot of crude language and speaks in prose- indicating that he is a 'low' character
- Any 'admiration' that the audience have for Iago is dissolved when Othello kills Desdemona/ when Iago kills Emilia- the gravity of his 'scheming' makes him unlikeable as innocents are killed.
